In any other battle or political game, Lance would’ve bet on Adelaide to grit her teeth and power through. She was a tough Gamma, after all.

But this negotiation was different. It was dragging the Frostfang massacre back into the light–a raw, bloody scar she couldn’t stand to touch. In the days to come, every step she took was going to feel like walking barefoot on broken glass.

With his sharp Alpha hearing, Lance caught the familiar sound of combat boots in the hallway. He instantly wiped the grim look off his face and stood up to meet her at the door, a warm smile spreading across his handsome face. “Settled in already?”

Adelaide pulled off her cap, which was still cold from the night air, and gave a tired “Mhm.”

“Lisa was exhausted from the trip. I told her to get cleaned up and head to bed early.”

Her gaze drifted over Lance’s shoulder, landing on the gifts scattered across the table. Every box was wrapped perfectly in velvet or dark wood with iron trim. The two massive crates still had parchment tags dangling from them, clearly labeling who they were

from.

Her eyes flickered to four carved walnut boxes on the coffee table. The tag read his uncle.

The sight hit her like a hot iron. She jerked her gaze away, her face going pale.

‘Want to open them?” Lance asked softly.

‘Not now.” Adelaide took a sharp breath, trying to push down the lump in her throat. She turned and called toward the door, ‘Beata, find a separate room for these. Keep them together.”

Beata walked in and hesitated when she heard the order. “Are you… sure you don’t want to see them?”

Back in the day, if anything came from the border–even a dried leaf tucked into a letter–Adelaide would’ve torn into it like a kid with candy. But now, she wouldn’t even touch them.

Not now. Just move them.” Adelaide’s voice was cold, with a tiny, nearly invisible tremor at the end.

Beata didn’t argue. She called in a few strong guards to haul the crates away. Since the gifts weren’t being unpacked, she couldn’t og them into the inventory properly, so she just found a quiet corner in the storehouse to tuck away all that heavy history.

Lance didn’t push the subject. He had some omegas prep the bath and personally laid out a soft black silk robe on the rack. While Adelaide was in the shower, he lit some calming incense by the fireplace in the bedroom.

After stashing the gifts, Beata slipped into the bathroom to help out. As an omega whose family had served the Doyles for generations, she knew exactly what Adelaide was going through. They shared the same blood debt–Beata’s parents and siblings had been slaughtered in that same massacre.

Beata hadn’t been sleeping either; the grief felt like a dull knife twisting in her gut. Ivy had told her to take it easy and stay away rom Adelaide for a bit to clear her head, but Beata couldn’t sit still. If she stopped moving, the horrific images from the pack lands would flood her mind and drive her crazy.

Adelaide looked up through the steam of the bath as Beata walked in with a thick towel. “Beata,” she said quietly

Adelaide noticed the dark circles under Beata’s eyes. Realizing the girl was probably having the same nightmares, her voice softened. “I’m heading to the Palace first thing tomorrow, then I’ve got military business. Tomorrow morning, I want you to go with Paisley to the Academy and pick up Cedric.”
