The pen Lycan Erasmus had been playing with snapped in his palm. A sharp crack echoed through the room as the two pieces fell onto the desk, rolling a few times before coming to a stop.

He lowered his gaze, his voice dropping to a nearwhisper, as if talking to himself.

I’m betting he doesn’t want to be branded a traitor. But if he actually had the mind for rebellionwhat could I even do to stop him?

Fabian felt a knot tighten in his chest.

He spoke up cautiously, Lycan Erasmus, I truly believe Alpha Lance has no such intentions. After all, you two are brothers.

Lycan Erasmus let out a selfdeprecating laugh, his voice flat.

I know he doesn’t right now. But in this seat, I have no choice but to watch him. I just don’t want us to reach the point where we’re tearing each other apart. He’d better stay without those thoughtsotherwise, he shouldn’t blame me for being coldblooded.

Fabian pressed his lips together and remained silent.

What Lycan Erasmus didn’t say out loud was that Lance’s direct confrontation actually made him feel slightly relieved.

If Lance were truly plotting something deeper, he wouldn’t have risked such a blatant display of defiance over the fate of Alpha Zander right now.

Because of this, Lycan Erasmus was certain that, at least for the moment, Lance lacked the ambition for a coup.

Fabian realized then that Lycan Erasmus wasn’t angry because he doubted Lance’s loyaltyhe was angry because Lance had refused to submit.

For now, Alpha Lance was a potential threat in the King’s eyes, but not yet a traitor.

At the Royal Marshal’s office, Lucas handled Ulrik’s interrogation personally.

Ulrik laid everything bare from the moment he stepped onto the Bloodscar front.

He hid nothing, even confessing to the affair with Velda. He knew he was finished.

Even if Lycan Erasmus wanted to protect him, the facts were undeniable: he was the commanding general of the Snowdeer Town operation, and he was sleeping with Velda. Put those two together, and any defense was a joke.

When he finished his statement, he let out a long breath. It wasn’t reliefit was just the heavy exhaustion of finally hitting the floor.

His only thought now was to keep Alpha Zander from being dragged down too far.

Otherwise, he couldn’t face Russell, who had lost an arm for him, nor could he face the kindness the Doyles had shown him at the front.

His career as a commander was over.

He had once imagined that if things went well, maybe he could stay on as a regular guard in the patrol.

But even that was a pipe dream now. Keeping his life was probably the best he could hope for.

He had thought Bloodscar would be the start of a legendary career; instead, it was the fuse that blew his future apart and buried the honor of his pack.

Lucas kept Ulrik at the Marshal’s office but didn’t throw him into the dungeons.

The private quarters originally prepped for Zanderwellfurnished and securebecame Ulrik’s new home.

Next came Velda. Again, Lucas presided.

When Velda was led in, she was a mess. Her hair was matted, her face was a sickly yellow, and her fingers were swollen and oozing pus where the silver had burned her.

The toll of her days in custody was written all over her.

But in reality, this wasn’t even truetorture yet.

The Marshals needed her alive, so they hadn’t moved to kill her; they were just using interrogation tactics to squeeze the truth out

of her.

Lucas sat across from her, his gaze cool.

Ulrik has confessed. You never saw Alpha Zander before the march on Snowdeer Town. In fact, Zander was wounded before the operation even took shape. It was impossible for him to give you secret orders.

Velda froze.

Ulrik confessed?she croaked. You brought him in? That’s impossible

Why is it impossible?Lucas asked flatly.

He was the general in charge. You caused this disaster; naturally, he has to answer for it.

Velda took a sharp breath, shaking her head violently. Her mind was racing.

No! Lycan Erasmus was grooming himwhy would he drag him into this? Isn’t Alpha Zander already back in the capital for trial? With him here, what does Ulrik matter?

She still believed the investigation was just a show for the Western Tribe.
