Lucas picked up on her outburst immediately.

“Is that so? Well, if Ulrik didn’t know, then it was even more impossible for Alpha Zander to know.”

He turned to the clerk and jerked his chin. “Record that: Velda testifies that neither Ulrik nor Alpha Zander had prior knowledge.”

Velda opened her mouth to argue, but the words died in her throat. She looked at the circle of stony–faced officers, then down at the silver chains already burning her wrists a raw, angry red.

Slowly, she lowered her eyes.

The defiance in her gaze didn’t vanish; she just pushed it down into a darker, deeper place.

Her wolf let out one last low rumble in her chest before falling silent.

Lucas nodded inwardly. Alpha Lance had called it right.

With Ulrik’s confession on the table, Velda’s attempt to frame Zander fell apart.
