Chapter 897

Third Person’s POV

Pandora wiped away her tears.

“Your sister used to keep me company here, but now she’s been locked away in the Enforcement Bureau. And you’re heading back to Hudson City, leaving me all alone in this empty palace. How could you do this to me? My wolf is stronger than you think. I can still shift. On the journey to Hudson City, I can travel through the forests in my wolf form. God really miss that feeling-the freedom of running wild through the mountains and fields. Si you refuse to speak to the King for me, fine. I’ll go talk to him myself. I’m certain he’ll appr my request.”

“Mom, trust me. We’ll be together again,” Germain said.

He paused before adding, “Just wait a little longer.”

Pandora reached out and held his hand.

She’d been ill for a long time, and her hand had wasted away to nothing but bone and vein, with hardly any flesh left. Yet her grip was unexpectedly strong.

“No, Germain, listen to me. Peace has finally returned to this country, and the Northern Kingdom has become what your father envisioned while he was alive-peaceful, prosperous, and a place where even ordinary werewolves can live a good life. Nothing matters more than that. We werewolves are pack creatures. A home to settle in and thrive-that’s been our people’s dream for generations.”

Germain’s expression stiffened for a moment. Then he forced a faint smile.

“Mom, you’ve spent most of your life in New York. Everything you’ve heard has been carefully chosen. People only tell you the good news. You’ve never seen the whole picture.

“New York is prosperous, yes. But do you know how many people along the borders are still living in poverty and hunger? Some of them can’t even afford to raise their own pups!”

Pandora shook her head, about to say something, but Germain beat her to it.

“And do you know how the father and son from the Frostfang Pack died down on the southern border?

“Lycan Erasmus could have dispatched Lance to their aid much sooner. Yet he hesitated, fearing that Lance’s military power and growing prestige would eclipse his own and endanger

his throne. His delay cost the two people their lives on that brutal battlefield.”

“No…” Pandora’s voice trembled. “I don’t believe that. That’s not the truth!

“That must be some rumor you heard.

“I may have never fought on a battlefield, but I know how complicated the situation is on th southern border. Bentley did reclaim those lands, but then the Dragon Ash Kingdom hit th with a surprise attack. No one foresaw that-not the King, not the Council elders. Plus, at th time, the King had just gotten the New York factions under control. You can’t blame him fo not expecting the tide of battle to turn overnight.”

Her bony fingers tightened around Germain’s wrist.

Tears streamed down her face.

“Germain, listen to me. Hudson City is rich. The King has treated you well. No… he has been exceptionally generous to you. You and your pups will have more wealth than you could eve spend in a lifetime. Please. Don’t take unnecessary risks. Don’t do anything that could destro the entire Blue Abyss Pack.”

Germain frowned.

“Mom, what are you talking about? What do you think I’m planning to do? I came here today because I wanted to spend some time with you before I leave.”

Pandora’s cloudy eyes locked onto his, her face etched with disappointment and sadness.

“You’re right. I suppose I’m getting old and overthinking things. This is just a mother-son conversation. If you’re unhappy with your luna, take a few breeders. You’re the alpha of a pack now. You could have any she-wolf you want.”

Germain’s face darkened. A sharp metallic scent burst from him. His claws pushed out just a fraction, and a low growl rumbled deep in his throat.

“Damn it,” he barked. “Who keeps coming in here, filling your head with this nonsense that I’m going to betray this country?

“Listen, I am nothing like Madison, and I never will be! What I’ve chased my whole life is absolute justice-not supreme power. And there’s no such thing as a born traitor. If… If one day someone really did march an army all the way here, it wouldn’t be because they were born rebellious. It would be because that incompetent fool Erasmus pushed innocent people to the point where rebellion became their only choice!”

Pandora’s

gray, murky eyes widened. Slowly, trembling, she withdrew her hand.
