Dorina showed us all the rooms, including the kitchen and the bathroom and explained that we must decide quickly as it was a very desirable place.
"How much rent does she want per month?" Fabrizio asked.
Dorina took the owner aside to talk to her. I noticed dissatisfaction on Dorina's face, but when she came back to us, her expression changed and she sported a smile sweeter than honey.
"She looks like a shrewd business lady," I thought to myself."Fabrizio is going to have to be careful seven times over."
"She is proposing a partnership of either fifty percent plus two hundred dollars rent a month or five hundred dollars a month without any involvement on her part. It includes a license to serve alcoholic beverages and coffee but not for the preparation of meals. Sandwiches may only be sold if they are prepared elsewhere and brought in already made and packaged, "Dorina explained.
"I need some time to think about it," Fabrizio said.
The taxi first dropped off Dorina and then took us home. Fabrizio went into our apartment to call some other places, and primarily to consult with Angelo. I went up to think about how to implement my plan for the purchase of the ground floor apartment, in the hope that it would appeal to the man in the pigsty and fit all his needs.
It was already a quarter to four when I came to the house and began climbing the smelly stairs to the top floor. I had to help the man go down the three flights of stairs. He was barely able to move and panted like a steam engine with every step. Every now and then I was forced to stop while he rested.
The distance to the ground-floor apartment was approximately one hundred meters, but it felt like it took forever. His walking was slow and laborious. "What an unfortunate person he is," I thought to myself. ''Who takes care of him? How can he live alone without any help?"
When we arrived, the owner was already waiting for us. She had a look of satisfaction on her face which said everything. She nodded her head in agreement.
I gave her to understand that I was interested in the apartment and that Dorina would be in touch with her.
I contacted Dorina, who immediately gave me the landlady's agreement to the price of five thousand dollars in cash. She had done all the preliminaries and negotiations in advance.
I asked her to prepare a contract for a cash sale and that we would meet the next day. I also asked her if she knew a lawyer who speaks Italian and she gave me a phone number of a lawyer named Giorgina. I called her and told her that I had to meet with her urgently.
It seemed to me that the deal was about to be closed. "I will soon be the proud owner of a luxury apartment for only five thousand dollars," I thought to myself. I, however, didn't imagine that the road to actual ownership was a long way off.
"All I have is a certificate of approval from the court along with an inheritance order," Vasili answered.
"Could you please show me the court order," Giorgina requested.
Vasili fetched it from among his documents and handed it to her.
She twisted her face from time to time while studying the court order.
When she finished, she turned to Vasili and said, "You surely know that this apartment is not recorded in the Land Registry Office under the name of your parents?"
Vasili, with a forlorn look on his face, as though he had just been thrown out into the street, looked at Giorgina and said, "Yes, I know, but the court recognized the rights of my parents to live in the apartment."
