Dorina was tense. "It's my first job; I hope I will not disappoint you."
"I'm sure I won't be disappointed. You have a good head on your shoulders."
The taxi stopped in front of her building, when she asked, "Would you like to come up with me for a small Ţuică?" she asked.
"Only if you promise me that there will be an interesting continuation after the Ţuică," I replied with a smile.
"You already know that that can't happen," she answered in a sweet voice.
I kissed her on the cheek and said goodbye.
The next morning I went to the Raifeissen Bank on Piazza Unirii, where I opened a dollar account and deposited the money I had left. Angelo and Fabrizio picked me up from the bank to take me to the airport for my flight home.
I said goodbye to Angelo, asking him to look after Fabrizio and make sure he didn't do anything foolish. I told Fabrizio not to forget to call his wife a. He told me that he had tried several times and neither Giulia nor his daughter Rosanna answered the phone. He did however reach his brother Giulio and his sister Matilda. They both told him that Giulia was very angry with him and that he had to decide what he wanted to do, as the situation at home is very serious. "It's like a barrel of explosives ready to go off," Giulio had told him.
I asked him if he wanted me to pass on anything to Giulia or Rosanna."Forget it," he yelled. "It's better if you have no contact with them. You're a terrible liar, and they will squeeze the truth out of you in seconds."
Before entering the departure longue, I turned to Fabrizio and asked to keep an eye on my apartment under renovation at Cismigiu. He promised me that he would.
A few hours later I landed in Florence. I immediately took a taxi to the main train station, Santa Maria Novella. I noticed on the schedule that the next train to Arezzo was in just twenty minutes, so I went to the platform and waited.
As soon as I entered my house, Paola rushed into my arms and gave me a huge hug.
"We haven't heard anything from you since you left," she said.
"Where is mother?" I asked.
"She is out shopping and will probably return any moment," she told me.
"Actually I was very busy, everything was so intense."How is Grandpa? Is everybody alright?" I asked.
"Yes, as a matter of fact he was here on Sunday for a visit. He even asked if we had heard from you," Paola answered.
I went into my study, where from the window I was able to see the statue of Vittorio Fossombroni, my "friend the plumber," though only half his profile.
I sat at the computer and I flipped through all the emails that had accumulated. Most were spam which I immediately deleted. Among the emails, there was one that especially caught my attention. It was an email from the agency where Dorina worked and was dated the day that I flew to Romania.
I was glad I got to know you and I enjoyed your company.
Giorgio.
In a matter of minutes the reply came. This time it was not so official.
My dear friend Giorgio,
Would you like me to refer to you as friend, or would you prefer lover?
The apartment is for sale. You can buy it for ten thousand dollars. I have the keys.
Yours,
Dorina.
On a street map of Bucharest that I had, I was able to find the location of the pedestrian shopping street where the building was situated. According to the specifications, the apartment was on the second floor and had two bedrooms, a kitchenette and bathroom.
