I was down to the last two chairs. I decided to do something desperate. I took the two chairs and threw them at the front plate glass of the bar. The glass smashed which activated the alarm. When the dogs heard the shrill of the alarm, they retreated.

I ran for about fifteen minutes till I reached the main street where I hailed a taxi that took me home.

It took me several hours to calm down. I just lay in bed with my eyes open, and finally fell asleep when it was nearly morning.

The ringing of my phone woke me up. It was Dorina, she probably heard about me being in town.

"Just wanted to be sure that our working relationship has ended," she said.

"Indeed, yes," I answered.

"What about our friendship, if there ever was one, did that end too?" she asked.

"That depends totally on you," I replied.

"From your point of view, are we friends or not?" she asked.

"As long as it is not business related, everything is possible," I answered.

"You sound like you are very angry," she commented.

"I was angry, but now I am mourning a dear friend," I replied.

"What happened?" she asked.

I told her about Fabrizio. She knew him and Luciana, from when we used to visit his bar. Upon hearing the news she remained silent for a while.

"Why didn't you call me? I would have come to the funeral," she said.

"It's all over now. Fabrizio is gone forever," I said.

"What about Luciana, does she know?" Dorina asked.

"Luciana disappeared. We have no idea where she is. Nobody has seen her," I responded.

"What do you mean disappeared? I see her quite often. I saw her just this morning," she said.

"Where can I find her?" I inquired.

Immediately a crowd gathered, and someone shouted "doctor."' A young man approached and quickly began to perform resuscitation. He lifted her legs and shook them violently until she began to respond and opened her eyes. When she noticed me standing there, she suddenly remembered what had happened and burst into tears.

When she calmed down and her tears had begun to subside, she asked me how it had happened. I told her and also about the letter.

We left the bar and I called Angelo and told him that I had located Luciana and that we were on our way to his apartment.

When we arrived at Angelo's apartment, he didn't greet her and barely looked at her. He shoved the letter into her hand and said, "Here is your letter."

She walked into the kitchen and with trembling hands tore open the sealed envelope. The letter was one sheet long with writing from top to bottom. Stains of teardrops were visible on the letter.

Luciana my love,

By the time you will read this letter, I'll be looking at you from elsewhere.

I've decided that my life without you is not worth living. From the moment you left me, I have been a walking dead man. It was only a matter of time before I gathered the courage to do what was necessary for me to do.

I am to blame for everything. You have no reason to think that you are at fault for what happened to me. I brought you to the point where you left me; to the point where I left you without any money; to the point where I made your life miserable with no hope. I am the guilty one and only I must bear the consequences. Our lives could have been so happy, had I been able to let you into my life without my self-destructive behavior with which I always punish those that are close to me.

When I was younger, I went to India, where I stayed at a monastery and learned the principles of Buddhism. That is where God first revealed himself to me and called upon me to come to the Kingdom of Heaven.
