Angelo fell down on his back, but was quick to rise, and said, "Wait, I will be back with the police."

When the man tried to punch him again, Angelo retreated and ran down the stairs.

With every passing day, jealousy and anger raged in Angelo's broken heart. He spent untold hours sitting in his car in front of the building where Elena had built a love-nest in the studio apartment that belonged to him.

Since she was not a Romanian citizen, it was imperative for her to leave Romania every so often and cross back into Bulgaria for a day or two before she could return to Romania. Once, when she was gone, Angelo called a locksmith who broke the lock and installed a new one. He then removed all the furniture and locked the apartment.

Angelo never heard from Elena again nor did he really care anymore.

During his daily visits to Fabrizio's bar, he began to befriend Rosanna and before long feelings began to develop between them. Mihaela tried to warn her not to get involved, but her loneliness was too overpowering. She was glad to be able to develop a friendship with one of her fellow countrymen. While he was older, he was attractive, available, and they shared a bond in their sadness over the death of her late father.

The love between Rosanna and Angelo was budding. He adored her, the daughter of his late friend who was some thirty years his junior. He swore to himself that he would never hurt her feelings, but I feared that she would hurt him and thus tried to dissuade him from the relationship. Nothing helped. Angelo was in love with Rosanna and before the year was out, he had proposed marriage to her.

The news quickly spread among all of us, including Giulia. She tried to talk her daughter out of marrying Angelo, because the vast age difference between them would affect her in the future, but Rosanna was determined to get married. Giulia was afraid that if she was too hard on Rosanna, she would end up in the same condition as her husband Fabrizio, so she acquiesced and gave her blessing.

The wedding was set for the middle of July 2002, so Angelo let us know that he wouldn't be joining us on our annual trip but wanted to get together in his house in Bucharest.

After a week of intense days, I returned home. During the various telephone conversations that I had with Angelo, he consulted with me about Rosanna. I didn't see anything wrong with his marrying her. After all Rosanna was mature for her age, and if she decided that Angelo was right for her, who was I to voice my opinion to the contrary?

However, I didn't want Rosanna to get hurt in any way. After all, I knew Angelo almost as well as I knew myself. I knew that on our next trip, he would find himself a female companion who would also sleep with him and that would be the end of Rosanna. That is why I was so surprised when he announced that if there were girls on our next trip, he wouldn't come.

"I don't like what is happening," Claudio began. "Angelo is no longer going to be travelling with us and you are busy with your apartments and shuttling between your wives. Roxana is waiting for me to come back and Silvia is waiting for Elia. What is going on here? Can somebody please explain it to me?"

"Angelo doesn't want to hurt Rosanna," I began explaining. "She knows him quite well and she knows that if he goes on a trip with us he is going to betray her and it will ruin their relationship. He has therefore decided to forgo all trips and to change his way of life. Let's not forget that he never had peaceful relations with his wife, with Mihaela or Elena. Now a window of opportunity has opened before him to make a new life for him and Rosanna. Let's not make things difficult for him and allow them their space."

Elia turned to me and asked, "What about you? If we decide to go, are you coming with us?"

"Have I said anything to the contrary?" I commented.

"I just wanted to confirm that you are coming. By the way, who will you be coming with?" he inquired.
