"With money," he answered. "Please ask her how much money she wants to remove the curse,"
"Claudio," I said, "I will do whatever you ask of me, but this story sounds very bizarre."
"Welcome to Romania," the border policewoman greeted me while stamping my passport.
The first thing I did when I arrived was to change euros into local currency. I then claimed my suitcase, passed through customs and went out into the arrivals hall. There, in a corner, stood Oana. She had been able to see me the entire time while I was waiting for my suitcase, on the large video monitor that was mounted in the wall. We hugged each other warmly, went outside and hailed a cab. Oana already knew to tell the driver to drive slowly and carefully.
I took out a package of Baci chocolates that I had brought with me. After eating one, she grabbed the rest out of my hand, and with a sweet smile she said, "I will not share this with anybody else. It is all mine."
The taxi stopped near my apartment, but before we went up we entered the bar below and had coffee.
"Oana, I have a problem. I must speak to Roxana urgently," I said to her.
"What happened?" she asked anxiously. "Has anything happened to Claudio?"
I told her the story of the curse and added that I really didn't believe it, but I couldn't argue with facts. The fact was that Claudio felt sick and was very scared and worried.
"I never heard anything like that, but if you want, I can talk to Roxana," she responded.
"And what will you tell her?" I asked.
"Leave that to me," she said. "I'll tell her to keep away from him and forget about him. It may cost something, but nothing significant."
I agreed to let her talk to Roxana.
We went upstairs to the apartment where everything was neat and clean. The small refrigerator was full of food, fresh bread, butter and jam.
"You're my little angel," I told her and kissed her on her cheek.
"I love you," she said to me and kissed me back.
Her response was quick and sharp. "What about you?" She said. "Money is all that interest you."
"No," I said. "There are actually things more valuable than money, for example, diamonds, gold and so on."
I laughed. Dorina didn't realize that it was a joke and said, 'Perhaps, and you're right, but the two of us are made from the same stuff."
I sat down, but Dorina was nervous and moved from the table to the window and back again.
She finally said, "Well, what brought you back to me?"
"I am looking for additional investments," I began telling her. "I want to purchase one or two luxury apartments in upper-class neighborhoods. First and foremost, they must be in prestigious areas. Perhaps you can talk to your uncle, the city architect, and see if he knows of any suitable apartments that are for sale. I am willing to go into partnership with you. You will get fifty percent and will not have to invest a cent."
"That is a very interesting proposition," she said. "Give me a day or two and I'll get back to you. Do you still have your Romanian phone number?"
