I nodded. I head no reason to lie to this person.
"I know, there's a lot of self-help books, and counselors, and people who want to help, but...at the end everything is up to you. Sometimes it's just...even if you want to, your body won't...sometimes it's too late. I just...maybe it's too late for some, but for you..."
I knew she was talking about herself, when she said it's too late for some, I knew that maybe...maybe this was my future if...
She suddenly smiled with that famous Kane grin. "I am beautiful no matter what they say, words can't bring me down, I am beautiful in every single way..." May sang too me. "I know, it's a bit cliche, but I just love this song. When I get depressed or sad, I just sing it out loud."
"Are you gonna get better?" I asked so quietly, it was almost a whisper. I didn't knew this girl, I met her literary five minutes ago, but it felt like I knew the darkest side of her. I couldn't explain it...I just felt a connection with her. She was broken, but only a Jimmy's relative would keep that smile on her face.
"I don't know, probably. I managed to get this far, no reason to stop now." She said optimistically. "Hey, why don't we exchange numbers, that's how you can ask me stuff if you'd like." I liked May. She tried so hard to keep a smile on her face, but I could see beneath her skin, beneath her bones...I could see that she saw in me what was once her, and that she was determined to save at least one of two lives in this room.
Cookie finally came out of the hospital bathroom, smelling like she'd put on way too much perfume. Horrible scent of flowers exploding in a bottle.
"Let's go Skye." She demanded, as if she had been waiting for me. "Bye, bye May!" She yelled walking through the door.
"See you, May." I smiled at my new friend with short blond hair and Jimmy's eyes.
"Until next time, then." She smiled back with that huge grin only a Kane could master.
It was still pretty early, I'm not quite sure what time it was, but it was definitely too late. To go to school that is.
We overslept.
I tried caring about missing school, but I simply couldn't care less. So much about being a good girl.
Lucas was leaning on the edge of an open window, smoking his first morning cigarette. Shirtless, of course. He did this thing where he slightly narrowed his eyes, every time he took a puff of smoke. Shades of grey were lazily dancing around him, wrapping him in a veil of smokey delight.
"School?" I asked with my weird morning voice.
He slowly took another breath of the dying cigarette, pouting his mouth in a way that he was able to blew an ashy circle through his lips. He shook his head.
"Mom gone for work?" I muttered in a tired way.
He nodded.
Ash was playing with his toes, trying to bite them, but Lucas hardly flinched.
"We could do something today." He finally spoke.
He smirked and picked up the shirt.
"Wait." I said and snatched it right out of his hands. "The Ash test."
"What?"
"The Ash test. Cats like the smell of sweat and if your shirt stinks she's gonna rub her nose in it, meaning it's 'washing machine' time." I placed the shirt next to the cat and she almost immediately started rubbing her cute pink nose into the stinky shirt. "That's it," I said and picked up the shirt. "this is going into the washer."
"What am I supposed to wear in the mean time?" Lucas asked, shocked.
I looked at him, glancing with my eyes from his feet, all the way up to his beautifully carved torso. "Jacket."
"Just the leather jacket?" I heard him yell as I was walking out of the room. I grinned, imagining Lucas wearing nothing but the jacket and jeans. I guess even I can be the pervert sometimes.
* * *
The old path towards Lucas's apartment. Old buildings falling apart, stray cats and dogs looking for a bite of food, trash bins filled with too much garbage, suspicious men walking up and down the street in a nervous way...Yeah, this path definitely wasn't all rainbows and unicorns.
