Eli lowered her head instead. “I ... no. I don’t feel that way.”

Naomi sighed. “Eli, maybe Althea really didn’t scold you. But didn’t you see her face?”

Eli fell silent.

She remembered Althea’s expression when she entered her room. That gentle smile. The nonjudgmental gaze. The hug that had instead made her cry.

“She was disappointed,” Naomi said softly. “I’m sure of it.”

Eli lowered her face.

“That doesn’t mean she was disappointed in you as her child.” Naomi quickly continued. “She was only disappointed because she saw someone she cared about put herself in that kind of state.”

Eli bit her lower lip.

“Lydia is the same way.”

Eli raised her face.

“When I act up too much, she usually just smiles and says it’s okay.” Naomi chuckled softly. “I used to think that meant she really didn’t mind. But as time went by, I began to realize that she was actually feeling something else.”

Naomi looked at Eli seriously. “Sometimes the people who love us choose not to scold us because they know we already regret what we’ve done enough. They don’t want to make us feel worse.”

Eli remained silent for quite some time. “I thought Mrs. Althea would be angry,” she finally said. “I was even prepared to be scolded.”

“And when she didn’t?”

“I actually felt even guiltier.”

Naomi gave a faint smile. “Because you know she treats you well.”

Eli nodded.

“Then take it as a lesson. Don’t make the people who love you keep having to understand and excuse your mistakes.”

Those words left Eli silent. There was something in what Naomi said that seemed simple, yet it struck precisely at the most sensitive part of her.

They then talked for a long time. Eli told her how her relationship with David had felt increasingly complicated lately. She talked about Natalie, about how she often gave in, and about the guilt that arose whenever she felt uncomfortable with how close David and Natalie were.

Naomi shook her head several times and criticized her without sugarcoating anything, but she never made Eli feel judged.

“You can love someone,” Naomi said at last. “But don’t let loving them make you start thinking that everything that hurts you is something you have to accept.”
