“Eli?”

The voice made Eli turn around. Several people were standing not far from their table. She immediately recognized some of them as David’s basketball teammates. They were people she had seen several times on campus, although they were not particularly close.

Naomi and Grace, who did not know them at all, simply exchanged a glance before turning their attention back to the conversation.

One of them immediately approached Eli. “Aren’t you going to class today?”

Eli gave a faint smile. “No.”

“No wonder we didn’t see you.” His expression then changed to one of slight concern. “How are you feeling? You drank quite a lot last night, didn’t you? We were even worried when we saw you.”

Eli nodded slightly. “I’m better now.”

“Thank goodness.” The man smiled. “But you really scared us last night.”

Eli simply chuckled softly. She did not want to discuss what had happened any further, especially in front of Naomi and Grace, who had been quietly watching the entire time. However, before the conversation ended, Natalie approached as well.

“I was actually worried too,” she said gently. “Especially after seeing you like that last night.”

Eli looked at her.

Natalie gave a faint smile. “David was actually planning to take you home. But for some reason, you ended up leaving with a stranger.”

Several people around them immediately turned to look and agreed with what Natalie had said. There were also some who whispered among themselves, asking who the man was who had taken Eli home last night.

Eli fell silent for a moment. She knew exactly who Natalie meant. “He’s not a stranger,” Eli finally replied.

Natalie blinked. “He isn’t? Who is he?”

“Josh.”

“Oh.” Natalie nodded slowly, but her expression instead looked like someone who still did not understand. “But you said you weren’t that close to him?”

Eli stared at Natalie for a few seconds. A sense of discomfort resurfaced inside her, but this time, she did not want to immediately back down.

“Not close?” Eli asked in a flat tone. “Josh isn’t a stranger to me.”

Eli’s voice remained calm, but it was firmer than usual.

Natalie fell silent.
