The day arrived for Lily’s ectopic pregnancy checkup. I wasn’t feeling well and stayed home to rest.

My mom called; her voice giddy. “Son, you did it! You got her knocked up!”

I frowned. “Did you talk to Lily?”

"I'm meeting your brother's girlfriend's parents next month, and I don't have any decent jewelry," she said. "So I had that Lily wire me ten grand to buy a gold necklace."

I slammed my hand on the table. “Are you crazy? Why are you asking Lily for money? If you need money, ask me!”

“Why would I ask you? She’s rolling in dough! It’s nothing to her! If she doesn’t spend it on me, who’s she going to spend it on?”

“Well, I guess you finally did something right. Maybe you inherited some of your mother’s charm after all. Get her pregnant, and you’re set!”

I tightened my grip on the phone. “You’re delusional. She’s not pregnant.”
