I woke up at noon.

“I called in sick for you,” Lily said, standing by the window. Her gaze flickered between me and the gloomy weather outside.

She looked distant, lost in thought. “Remember when we first moved to San Francisco?” she asked softly. “It was just like this, raining for days.”

“One time, we both forgot our umbrellas. The street was flooded, water up to our calves. You grabbed my hand and we ran through the rain. I was wearing heels that day, but I kept up with you.” She laughed softly. “When we got home, you used a hairdryer to dry my shoes, and we blew a fuse.”

I smiled faintly. How could I forget those days?

We were broke, but happy. Our tiny apartment couldn't contain our dreams for the future.

Now, in this sprawling house, we were strangers, living a lie.
