Lily refused to get a divorce. She spun a tale about Oliver coming to her a year ago, claiming to be terminally ill. He’d been drowning in regret and wanted her to have his child.

“Jason, I thought, since we’re meant to be together forever, even if this baby didn’t make it, we could always try again. That’s why… That’s why I lied about the miscarriage…”

“But he’s still alive,” I said, my voice laced with bitterness. “Don’t tell me your love magically cured him.”

Her eyes filled with tears. “I’m sorry, Jason. I wasn’t thinking straight. I believed him.”

“Then he told me he’d lied because he loved me so much.”

“You knew he was lying but you still continued the affair.”

“I can explain!”

I didn’t want to hear her excuses.

Lily cupped my face, forcing me to meet her gaze. “You know Oliver was my first love. I gave him everything, and he broke my heart. I don’t love him. I just… just…”

“You just enjoyed the thrill of having him wrapped around your finger, the excitement of a forbidden romance.”

Tears spilled down her cheeks. “Jason, you understand me, don’t you?”

I smiled, a cold, empty smile. “I do. But I won’t forgive you.”

She wrapped her arms around me, her body pressed close, her warm breath on my neck. “Jason, if I get pregnant, please, for the sake of our child, give me one more chance. Please?”

I wanted to push her away, but I couldn’t.

“What did you put in my drink?”

She didn’t answer, just gazed at me with love in her eyes.

I felt sick, sicker than when I’d discovered her affair.
