After setting a date for the divorce, I flew to New York alone. I’d booked a room at a charming inn run by a college friend, Chloe, a local girl from a well-off family. It was off-season, and the inn was quiet.

I was sipping tea under a tree in the front yard when the wind chime on the door tinkled.

“Single room, please.”

My breath caught in my throat.

I turned and saw Lily.

“Sorry, we’re fully booked,” Chloe said, a bright smile on her face.

Lily looked incredulous. “How is that even possible?”

“Very possible,” Chloe chirped, her smile widening. “We’re not accepting any new guests starting today.”

“Well, I’m not here to stay. I’m looking for someone.”

“That someone doesn’t seem too eager to be found.”

“What’s your relationship with him?” Lily demanded, her face hardening.

Chloe’s smile didn’t reach her eyes. “If he wants me to, I’ll call the cops.”

Lily called out to me, desperation in her voice.

I pretended to be absorbed in my book, ignoring her.

After she left, I asked Chloe, “How’d you know she was looking for me?”

“You posted a picture of you two on Facebook, before the wedding,” she replied.

I’d shared our wedding photos online. I was surprised she remembered.

“Sorry about that,” I said, forcing a smile. “We’re in the middle of a divorce.”

“No need to apologize. If there’s anything I can do, just let me know. You know my dad’s a lawyer.”

Before I could answer, a man burst through the door.
