“Is Miss Ruby here?” he asked, craning his neck to peer inside.

As he moved, Fanny saw the man standing behind him. Cassian. Tall and imposing, he radiated an aura of command even when standing perfectly still. But today was different. A faint, almost imperceptible shadow of sorrow clung to him.

Fanny’s eyes met his over Bennett’s shoulder.

“Excuse me,” he said, giving her a slight nod.

*BAM!*

Fanny slammed the door in his face.

Outside, Bennett jumped back, his eyes wide. Another second and his nose would have been flattened. He gaped, stunned by Fanny’s uncharacteristically violent outburst.

Fanny turned, her chest heaving, to find Ruby staring at her in surprise. She cleared her throat, realizing she might have overreacted. “Don’t see him,” she said, her expression hardening again.

If Ruby hadn’t just questioned Cassian’s motives, she might have let them in. After all, he had helped uncover the truth. But now she understood. They were here for one reason: to ask for forgiveness for what they had done a year ago.

It wasn’t going to be that simple.

“Ruby,” Cassian’s voice came from outside the door, low and resonant. “I’m here today to beg for your forgiveness.”

Ruby didn’t move, but Fanny’s face twisted in disgust.

“I’m calling Hayley,” Fanny declared. She could provide some much-needed firepower when she arrived.

Ruby watched her friend go into battle mode and couldn’t help but smile faintly. She didn’t stop her. The girl who would have abandoned a top-tier law firm for love was long gone, replaced by a woman who knew that a past love was nothing compared to a present friend.

“What?! He has the nerve to show his face!” Hayley’s shriek erupted from the phone as soon as Fanny explained the situation. “Don’t you dare open that door! Wait for me!” she commanded before hanging up abruptly. Ruby could just make out the sound of keys jingling before the line went dead.
