“Then what about me?” Landon blurted out.
Ruby frowned, giving him a strange look. *What about him? Who was he in this equation?*
Landon met her gaze, and the detached confusion in her eyes felt like a physical blow. The words he’d just spoken—*what about me?*—echoed in his mind. His jaw tightened. Suddenly, all the energy seemed to drain out of him, his playful demeanor dissolving into a stark, silent stillness. Without another word, he turned and walked back upstairs.
Fanny watched his dejected retreat with a puzzled frown. “What was that about? I thought this was the first time you’d seen him since you were kids.”
Ruby found it strange, too. She glanced at the empty staircase before turning back. “I don’t know,” she said with a sigh. Ever since she’d met Landon again, she’d felt his eyes on her, a gaze that held more weight than that of a new acquaintance. But for the life of her, she couldn’t place him anywhere in her memories.
…
At the Veyne Private Medical Center, the Steele family had arrived early in the morning to visit Sylas.
“How did you get yourself into this state?” the matriarch asked, her brow furrowed with concern as she saw the IV drip attached to his arm. She’d always had a soft spot for the Cunningham boy.
Sylas, looking much more energetic than he had a few days ago, waved his free hand. “It looks worse than it is. I’m fine, really.”
The matriarch nodded thoughtfully and settled into a chair Pearl had brought for her. “So,” she began, stroking her chin and eyeing him shrewdly, “I hear you have some feelings for our Ruby.” Her tone was casual, but the question landed with the weight of an interrogation.
The atmosphere in the room instantly grew tense.
“Grand-matriarch, why are you asking about that all of a sudden?” he mumbled, scratching his head sheepishly.
This time, she didn’t let him change the subject. “Just answer the question,” she ordered, tapping impatiently on the bedside table.
“Yes,” he admitted without a second’s hesitation.
As the word left his lips, Pearl and the old patriarch both turned to stare at him. Sylas suddenly felt like he was under a microscope.
The matriarch, satisfied with his answer, seemed to relax. She casually picked up a bowl of grapes from his bedside table and began popping them into her mouth. In moments, the bowl was half empty.
“Ma’am, Rue peeled those for me,” Sylas whined. “I haven’t even had more than a few myself.”
