“If I may, Mr. Veyne,” Fanny cut in, stepping forward to block Cassian’s view of Ruby. She offered a tight, polite smile. “There’s one thing I don’t understand. What do you mean you ‘found the truth for Ruby’? This isn’t a favor. This is you paying the price for your mistake.”

Fanny was normally a model of decorum, but she was reining in her temper. She shot a sidelong glance at Hayley. There was someone else here who could be the designated maniac.

“Exactly!” Hayley chimed in, her brows furrowed in anger. “Our Ruby spent a year in prison because of you! Clearing her name now is the bare minimum you owe her!”

Bennett nervously eyed the two furious women, then stole a glance at his boss. Cassian, however, didn’t flinch. He simply lowered his head, his posture one of complete contrition.

“You’re right,” Cassian admitted, his voice quiet. “It was my negligence, my prejudice. I trusted the wrong person and refused to give Ruby the benefit of the doubt. It’s all my fault. I am here today to sincerely apologize.” He absorbed their anger without protest, his gaze fixed on the spot behind them where Ruby stood.

His earnest and repentant attitude left Fanny and Hayley at a bit of a loss. They exchanged a look, then turned to Ruby.

“There’s no need,” Ruby said, shaking her head softly.

The air seemed to freeze. Cassian felt a hand squeeze his heart, cutting off his breath. A terrifying sense of loss washed over him. He curled his fingers into a fist. “Everything I owe you, I will pay it back. Please, Ruby… forgive me…” His voice grew hoarse, ending in a desperate, pleading whisper.

“Cassian, that year in prison changed me. I’m not the same person I was,” she said, her tone devoid of emotion. “Even if I forgave you, we could never go back. So why are you doing this?”
