“No,” he said, his voice low and raw. “Not until you promise to forgive me.” The desperation in his eyes was almost pitiful.

Ruby stared at him, momentarily unable to reconcile the man before her with the powerful, decisive CEO she remembered. Fanny and Hayley exchanged wide-eyed, gossipy glances, while Bennett’s jaw dropped. *Is this really my boss?* he thought, quickly schooling his expression. *Like uncle, like nephew,* he mused. *They even chase women the same way.* He was reminded of Sylas’s own brand of shameless theatrics around Ruby.

The difference was, Ruby had always treated Sylas with a certain indulgence, the kind an elder might show a mischievous junior. For Cassian, however, her patience had run out.

“Let go, or I’m calling the police,” she warned, holding up her phone, her finger hovering over the emergency call button.

Bennett wasn’t particularly concerned. Veyne & Co. practically ran Quinborough; even if the police did show up, Cassian would be out in minutes. But Cassian’s eyes widened in horror. She would call the police on him, just to make him leave?

A bitter, self-mocking smile twisted his lips. His fingers twitched, and he slowly released his grip on her wrist.

Ruby turned to go back inside. But just as the door was about to close, Cassian spoke again, his voice strained. “You won’t forgive me… is it because of Sylas?”

“Sylas?” The name finally broke through her icy composure, but the emotion it elicited was anger—fury at his baseless accusation. Her face darkened.

“Little old me?” a lazy, drawling voice suddenly interjected. “Uncle, you give me too much credit.”

Everyone froze and turned toward the sound. Sylas, dressed in a hospital gown, was just closing the door of a taxi.

Ruby’s frown deepened, but she instinctively moved to help him. “What are you doing out of the hospital?” she demanded, her eyes scanning him for any sign of weakness. He looked a little pale, but otherwise fine. “And you’re still in your gown?”

Sylas just grinned. “I staged a secret escape, just for you, Rue. A surprise. As for the clothes… well, I was in a hurry to see you. Does it matter what I’m wearing?” He winked, looking for all the world like a spoiled but charming puppy.

Hayley rolled her eyes. “You getting discharged is a surprise now?”
