Selene’s gaze dropped to Felicity’s dirty canvas shoes, her slightly disheveled hair, and the faint sheen of sweat on her face.

"You already went to Harrison with your news," Selene stated, not as a question, but as a fact. "Let me guess his reaction."

Felicity stared, feeling as though the ground had fallen out from under her. For the first time, she felt like she didn't know this woman at all. A primal, instinctual fear prickled at her skin, and a voice in her head screamed *run*, but her legs felt like they were cast in lead.

"Even after you told Harrison you used the sample he had frozen at the hospital to get pregnant, he didn't want the baby," Selene continued, her voice calm and analytical. "He probably took you to the hospital himself, planning to have you get rid of it."

She circled around Felicity, her eyes landing on a large, raw scrape on her elbow. "When you realized what was happening, you jumped out of the car and ran. And you ran here, seeking refuge, because you knew you couldn't trust your own parents not to sell you out for their own gain."

Felicity instinctively tried to cover the scrape on her arm, her body trembling. Everything Selene said was true. Harrison had initially said he was just taking her for a check-up, and for a moment, she'd believed he might accept the child. But in the car, he had been icily silent. When they arrived at the hospital, doctors and nurses were already waiting in the parking garage. A cold dread washed over her. This wasn't the behavior of a man accepting his child. Realizing he intended to force her into an abortion, she had jumped from the moving car and fled.

Just as she'd suspected, Harrison's men had given chase. She knew her parents were unreliable, so on instinct, she ran toward Selene’s neighborhood. As she got closer, she noticed Harrison’s men were no longer pursuing her so relentlessly. She didn't understand why, but she had a gut feeling that coming to Selene was the right move.

"Are you having me watched?" Felicity asked, her voice sharp with suspicion.

Selene didn't answer. Her gaze shifted to a point behind Felicity.

Felicity turned and saw the elevator doors at the end of the hall slide open. Harrison stepped out. A sharp gasp escaped her lips. She instinctively stumbled back, but Selene’s voice floated to her, cool and steady. "You love him, don't you? You want to marry him. He's right here. Why are you hiding?"
