The moment the words left Selene's mouth, Luke snapped his chopsticks in half. His face darkened, a storm brewing in his eyes. "That bastard Harrison! I'm going to rip his damn head off!"
"Don't swear in front of Daph," Selene reminded him quietly.
Daph, sensing the shift in tone, quickly finished the rice in her bowl. Though she only half-understood the adult conversation, she knew her presence was preventing them from speaking freely. She shoveled the last bite into her mouth and slid off her chair.
"Slow down," Selene said, watching her daughter's cheeks puff out like a hamster's. She chewed dutifully before swallowing. Selene wiped her face with a napkin. "Don't go to the playground tonight. Why don't you watch some cartoons in your room instead?"
Usually, Daph would go play with other kids after dinner. Although Felicity couldn't get into the complex and Daph wasn't afraid of her, Selene didn't want her daughter to be bothered.
"Okay, Mommy," Daph agreed, then glanced at Adrian. She wrapped her arms around Selene's legs, purring like a kitten. "Mommy, can Mr. Shaw stay and play a game with me?"
"Of course," Selene smiled.
Luke frowned. "What game?"
"You wouldn't understand," Adrian chimed in. "After all, *you* never play games with Daph."
Luke's eyes darkened as he shot Adrian a sharp look.
"Mr. Shaw, I'll be waiting for you in the playroom!" Daph called out, skipping away.
Adrian picked up his bowl and slurped the last of the broth. "It's all in the past," he said quietly.
Selene's expression was soft. "Yes, it's all in the past." Even hearing about Harrison and Felicity's history no longer caused that familiar sharp pain in her chest.
She turned to Luke as she finished her meal. "Let your men bring Felicity in. It's better than having her cause a scene at the gate and disturb the neighbors." She added, "I'll see her after I'm done eating."
"You're going to see her?" Luke asked, shocked.
"I can't have her harassing me forever," Selene said. She looked up, her voice cool. "She's always wanted to be Harrison's wife. And seeing as we're family, bound by blood…" She let out a bitter laugh at the irony. "I think I'll grant her wish."
