“You can call me Ramon,” the man continued. “Or… grandfather. That is up to you.”

Izzy frowned. “I only had one grandfather, and that is not you.”

“You are wrong about that,” Ramon said. “I am your grandfather’s only brother. By legalities, I am still your grandfather.”

“My grandfather’s half-brother died,” Izzy replied. She knew about this a long time ago. Her grandfather doesn’t have any other family alive. “He was killed by his enemies.”

Ramon snorted. “Is that what they told you? Is that what he… told you?” He leaned forward. “It was your grandfather—my very own brother—who tried to kill me, Isabella. Obviously, I knew you wouldn’t believe a word I say.”

Izzy’s brows furrowed. “What do you mean?”

“You must be confused,” Ramon said. “If we are related, why would I be doing this to you? Right?”

Izzy didn’t respond.

Ramon chuckled. “I’m not trying to harm you. I was trying to save you. I wanted you away from Rossi Group. And I was about to succeed... until you changed the storyline.”

“Storyline?”

“Yes,” he said. “Everything was going perfectly. You were there with Calen Weiss. You didn’t care about Rossi Group. You were devoted to your man. You were walking away. That was the right ending. But then you got greedy. Or maybe foolish. You came back.”

He pointed at her. “And now you have to suffer. Just like your mother. Just like your father.”

Izzy’s breath hitched. “The car accident.”

“They refused to follow the script,” Ramon said. “They wanted a different path and start working in the company. So they had to leave. Killed off. Like characters in a book.”

Izzy’s chest tightened.

“You see,” Ramon said. “Once upon a time, I was supposed to have it all. I built the foundation. I gave everything. But my brother—your precious grandfather—he took it. Took Patrizia. Took my future. I lost everything. And now, I’m just taking back what was stolen.”

He rolled his wheelchair closer. “You were never meant to be part of the endgame. But you insisted. So now, you get rewritten too.”

“You–” Izzy frowned.

Ramon didn’t move back. “Everything is as it’s supposed to be. Once you’re gone, I’ll deal with Liam next. Then I’ll take the company. Everything will go back to how it should have been. The Rossi Group is my hard work and it will only belong to me. Ah… the taste of winning. I wonder what my dear brother would feel underground if he knew this?”

Izzy stared at him. “Why? Your brother is dead. Why are you hell bent on doing this?”

Ramon leaned forward, elbows resting on the arms of the wheelchair. “Once upon a time, my brother thought he could change destiny. He thought he could just take what was mine—Patrizia, the company, the respect. What’s wrong with playing around and proving him wrong? Destiny isn’t something you’re given. It’s something you take. And I waited. I waited and watched and learned. This game—it’s been worth it.”

Izzy’s jaw tightened. “My grandmother loved him.”

“WRONG!” Ramon slammed his fist against the armrest. “That’s WRONG! Patrizia only loved me! She would never love that bastard! He took her. He forced that marriage. He manipulated everything. She was mine. She was always mine.”

Izzy didn’t flinch.

Ramon stared at her, breathing hard. “You don’t know anything. You’re just like the rest of them. Trying to rewrite what already belongs to me.”

He leaned closer. “But you won’t feel anything. Just like your parents, you’ll be gone before the crash even happens. Everything’s prepared. All you have to do now is show up and play your part.”

He turned his head slightly. “Inject it.”

Two men entered the room. They were dressed like nurses, sterile uniforms and gloves. One carried a tray with a loaded syringe.

Ramon looked at her. “Don’t worry. This won’t hurt. No pain. You’ll be asleep before the impact. It’s clean. It’s planned. Just like your parents.”

Izzy took a deep breath. Her limbs tightened against the restraints. She pulled once, then again. No give.

The two men moved toward her.

Then—

A loud explosion shattered the silence. The building shook. Dust fell from the ceiling.

Ramon jolted in his chair. “What the hell was that?”

Another boom. Closer. The lights above flickered.

“What’s going on?” he barked.

One of the men backed toward the door. A second explosion hit. The floor trembled.
