Jane Foster couldn’t help but smile when she saw her daughter in such high spirits. She walked over, teasing, “Kathy, what’s got you all dressed up today? Who are you meeting?”

Katherine grinned, a little smug. “Who else? I’m going to see Alan, of course.”

Jane’s eyes lit up. “That’s wonderful. You and Alan have been engaged for years. It’s about time you set a date—strike while you’re young and maybe think about having a baby soon!”

At the mention of marriage, a wave of frustration caught in Katherine’s chest. She didn’t understand it herself—she and Alan were engaged, but after all these years, he still hadn’t mentioned setting a wedding date. She’d dropped hints, both subtle and obvious, but Alan always brushed her off, blaming his busy schedule. Most days, he barely bothered to show her any affection at all.

Thinking about it made Katherine feel both angry and wronged. “Mom, why won’t Alan marry me? Do you think he’s still hung up on Rebecca, that little tramp?”

Jane quickly moved to comfort her. “Absolutely not. Rebecca’s made a mess of her life—she got herself pregnant, and no decent man would want her now. Men always prefer girls like you—clean, sweet, and proper.”

She gave Katherine’s nose a playful tap, and Katherine’s lips curled into a satisfied smile. “Exactly. Alan would never go for someone like her. Tonight, I’m going to look so gorgeous he won’t be able to take his eyes off me.”

Jane chuckled, her gaze full of affection. “Of course, Kathy. You’re my daughter—the prettiest girl in the world.”

Katherine continued perfecting her look. She fastened a pair of sparkling earrings and spritzed on a hint of perfume.
