Hugo watched Diana walk through the gate before turning back to the car. He didn't drive straight to the estate. Instead, he leaned back in the driver's seat and sent Diana a message.

Hugo: [Hey, remember to eat the cake.]

Her reply came almost immediately.

Diana: [Eating it now. Are you home yet?]

Hugo: [Not yet. Still on the road.]

Diana: [Drive safe.]

Hugo stared at those two words for a long moment before starting the car with a smile.

The lights were on throughout the old Kingston estate.

Marvin looked up when Hugo walked in and set aside the newspaper he had been reading. "Did you sort out your brother's business?"

Before Leon left, Marvin had asked Hugo to keep an eye on the situation and prevent the two families from falling out.

"It's done." Hugo sat down on the sofa. "They'll get the papers in 30 days."

Marvin let out a heavy sigh, equal parts disappointment and frustration. "Your brother is hopeless. He let a marriage that good slip right through his fingers."

Hugo said nothing.

Marvin glanced at him. "You're not getting any younger either. Anyone you fancy?"

"Yes," Hugo answered without hesitation.

Marvin immediately perked up. "Which family?"

"I haven't won her over yet." Hugo rose to his feet. "I'm heading upstairs, Grandpa."

Marvin watched him leave, certain something was different, though he couldn't quite figure out what.

Upstairs, Hugo stepped out of the shower just as his phone lit up. Diana had sent him a photo. The cake was already gone.

He saved the picture and set it as the background for their chat.

Outside the window, the night had deepened. He lay back on the bed and closed his eyes. '30 days… I've already waited far longer than that.'

On the first day of the divorce cooling-off period, Diana returned to Jouleston. From the front seat, Nina briefed her on the upcoming week's schedule.

Diana listened and occasionally nodded in acknowledgment.

Suddenly, her phone buzzed.

Hugo: [Diana, let me know when you get to Jouleston.]
