"Why are you suddenly back?" Diana asked, surprise flickering across her face.

"I saw the news," Hugo said. "I figured you'd be stressed."

"I'm not stressed," Diana replied.

Hugo smiled. "Then I just wanted to come back."

Diana studied him for a moment, then opened the door and got in.

"Where to?" Hugo asked.

"Home."

The car pulled out of the lot. Hugo drove with steady ease.

"How are things at the Jillson Group?" Diana asked.

"Fine. With my grandfather keeping an eye on things, nothing's going to slip through."

"Then stay in Norchester. Stop running back and forth," she said.

Hugo said nothing.

Elsewhere, Tiffany was reviewing a case file when she received a call from her father.

"Your brother's gotten himself into trouble," Stanley said.

Without looking up from the file, Tiffany asked, "What happened?"

"He got beaten up. He's in the hospital."

Out of professional habit, Tiffany asked, "Did anyone call the police?"

"They did. The police said he owed money and fought back when they came to collect, so they're treating it as mutual assault."

Tiffany set down her pen. "And you're calling me about this because you want what, exactly?"

Stanley hesitated.

"The debt is his own doing. It has nothing to do with me." Tiffany's voice remained calm. "And don't come to me about him again."

"Tiffany!"

"If you think I'm being cold, go ahead and take me to court. We'll see whether paying off my brother's gambling debts is actually my responsibility."

The office fell silent.

She stared at the file for several more seconds but couldn't absorb a single word.

Her phone rang again. This time, it was Raymond.

"I had someone look into your brother's situation." Raymond explained it plainly. "The man who hit him was hired by the creditor. It's nothing serious, just superficial injuries."

"Why would you bother looking into that?" she asked.

"I was worried you'd go soft on him."

"I won't."

Tiffany truly wouldn't. Still, having her family bring this kind of mess to her every few days was exhausting.

"Good." The line fell quiet for a few seconds before Raymond spoke again. "Are you free tonight? I heard a decent steakhouse just opened."

"I'm not free."

"Tomorrow, then."
