In that split second, Amelia shoved a fruit knife into Margaret's hand.

Before Margaret could react, hot, fresh blood splattered across her face.

Her mind went blank, and it wasn’t until William rushed over and picked Amelia up that she realized what had just happened.

Margaret struggled to her feet, bracing herself against the cold wall, her eyes filled with helplessness. "William, we've both been deceived by Amelia! Three years ago, she lied to me, saying a human test subject was needed to create the cure that would save you. It’s because of that lie that I now have bone cancer..."

Slap!

A sharp, resounding slap echoed through the room.

William’s palm stung, his trembling hand clenching into a fist as he shouted, "Margaret, what are you doing, causing a scene like this?"

Her cheek burned, the metallic taste of blood filling her mouth.

Margaret shook her head, tears welling up in her eyes. "I’m not causing a scene! Amelia tried to kill me with a knife just now!"

"Enough!"

William’s eyes turned red with rage as his voice grew icy. "Do you think I’ll forgive you with just a few lies? Don’t even dream of it. If anything happens to Amelia, I’ll make you pay a thousand times over!"

With that, William scooped Amelia into his arms and stormed out of the room.

Margaret stood frozen, the weight of her words sinking in.

Moments later, the people who had been gathering outside the door rushed in, pummeling her with fists and kicks.

"You filthy bitch, how dare you hurt Amelia!"

"You were ungrateful and tried to break up with Mr. Bradford back then, and now you’re trying to ruin his happiness with Amelia!"

"Heartless wretch, may you rot in hell!"

The pain surged through her body, and it felt as if she were descending into the very depths of hell.

At her breaking point, Margaret coughed up another mouthful of blood, her consciousness slipping away.

When she awoke again, she was in a hospital bed, and Benjamin was holding her medical report.

His voice was filled with concern as he spoke, "Margaret, did you already know your bone cancer was in its final stage? Is it because of testing the medicine for William? You’ve sacrificed so much for him, does he even know?"

"What should I know?"

The door to the room opened, and William strode in, shooting Benjamin a cold look before lifting the fragile Margaret from the bed and heading toward the door.

What?

Margaret froze, recoiling as she shook her head. "No, I won’t do it!"

"William, Amelia brought this on herself!"

"She made me get bone cancer, and I won’t give her my cornea, even if I die!"

"Shut up!"

William seized her throat with a cruel grip, his expression one of disgust. "Margaret, you’re so vile! You made Amelia blind, and now you’re coming up with this terminal illness excuse to avoid donating your cornea to her!"

"I was blind myself when I fell for you!"

Margaret’s heart sank, as though she were sinking into an abyss with no end.

Her eyes reddened, and she forced out a bitter laugh. "William, it was my blindness that made me throw myself at you. Leaving you was the best decision I ever made."

"Get the surgery started, now!"

William roared, grabbing the pen and signing the consent form in fury. His cold gaze fell on Margaret lying on the bed. "I bought her from Old Pierce years ago. I’m her legal guardian, and I have the right to sign for her!"
