When Ashley came to my office, she already knew why I had called her in.
She looked at me. Her face was calm. She even rolled her eyes at me.
"What do you want? I'm busy," she said.
I sneered. "Do you know what defamation is? If I call the police now, you could go to jail," I said.
She clutched her stomach and laughed. "Oh, I just said a few words, and I could go to jail? You think just because you're a company leader, you can do whatever you want? How dare you!" she said.
"Ignorance really is bliss," I thought.
I stood up and walked over to her. "You can read, and you know how to use a phone. Look up defamation right now," I said.
She didn't take out her phone. From the look on my face, she knew I wasn't joking.
I continued, "If you go to jail, who's going to take care of your son?"
Ashley's expression changed instantly. She avoided my gaze and looked scared.
After a long pause, she timidly asked me, "Can't you call the police?"
I didn't respond. I just sat back down, looked at her, and stayed silent.
"Eric, we've been neighbors for so many years. You wouldn't be this harsh, would you?"
I almost laughed out loud. "Yeah, we've been neighbors for years. How have I ever wronged you? My wife and I have helped you so much, even got you this job. I really want to know, why would you do this?"
She muttered under her breath, "Because you wouldn't let your daughter marry my son."
She actually dared to bring that up again?
I nodded. "Of course, I keep my word. But you're fired," I added.
"What? Didn't I just apologize?" she said.
I didn't want to say another word to her. I turned to leave, but she blocked my way again. "Why are you firing me? You're in finance, not HR," she protested.
I smiled at her, then took out my phone and called HR on speaker. "James, Ashley from cleaning has been fired," I said.
James responded immediately, "Got it, Eric. I'll make sure she leaves right now."
Ashley stared at me, dumbfounded.
I put away my phone. "Get out," I said.
Ashley packed up and left that same day. When I got off work, I found my car covered in paint and filth.
