"The DNA results are in—a 99.9% match confirms you're related. My condolences," Andrew said, carefully observing my reaction.
Although I had expected this outcome, it still hit me hard.
"Andrew, you have to catch the killer. Emily's death can't be in vain!" I pleaded, gripping his hand.
"Don't worry. We found skin tissue between the victim's fingers. We should be able to catch the culprit soon," Andrew reassured me, though I remained anxious.
"By the way, where's John?"
"Oh, he's been busy at the hospital lately, staying there during the day and coming home at night."
Andrew said, scratching his head: "Got it. I'll head out now and keep you updated."
I nodded and watched him leave.
I then received a text message:
"Ms. Smith, your scar removal procedure is scheduled for this afternoon. Please arrive on time."
After the surgery, I went shopping and bought a few new clothes. I especially liked a tank top, so I wore it home.
When I opened the door, John was back and cooking in the kitchen.
"You're home? Dinner will be ready soon. Go wash your hands," John said.
He seemed surprised by my outfit and asked: "I thought you didn't like sleeveless tops. Why the change?"
I twirled around and replied: "Do you like it? I've decided I like this style."
John nodded and said it looked good, but the atmosphere remained tense.
Dinner was unusually quiet, with John looking preoccupied. He soon said he had to leave for an urgent matter.
I was confused but finished my meal and went through my usual evening routine.
Suddenly, I heard a loud noise from downstairs.
I went to investigate and found John, drunk and collapsed in the foyer.
Seeing me, he staggered to his feet.
John's eyes were cold as he approached me, cornering me against the wall.
"Who are you?" he demanded, his breath reeking of alcohol.
"Why are you drinking?"
"Who are you really!?" John's voice rose in anger.
I was taken aback by his strange accusations and retorted: "What are you talking about? What's wrong with you?"
"Should I call you Sophia or Emily?"
Before I could respond, he grabbed my throat: "You're Emily, aren't you? You're the one who harmed Sophia!"
I felt a surge of panic but quickly composed myself.
"Andrew, what are you saying? I'm Sophia, your wife."
"Stop lying!" John threw me to the ground, furious.
John, convinced I was Emily, was determined to take me to the police station and ignored my distress.
When Andrew arrived, he saw John dragging me outside while I struggled. Blood had dried on my face, and more was pooling on the floor, creating a chaotic scene.
"John, what are you doing? Let Sophia go!" Andrew stepped forward, trying to restrain John but was pushed aside.
"She's not Sophia, she's Emily! She's the murderer!" John roared, even intimidating Andrew.
"John, you can't just decide she's not Sophia based on a mole! They're twins. It could be a coincidence!" Andrew was frantic, trying to help while fearing John would hurt me.
"John, let go. Let's talk this through. First, get Sophia to the hospital. Can't you see she's bleeding?"
John wasn't listening. He shouted: "A mole doesn't mean anything. What about the surgery scar?"
"What scar? What are you talking about?" Andrew asked, puzzled.
"There was a scar on the body with a knife wound. I noticed it."
"Sophia had an appendectomy years ago. Can you call that a coincidence too?"
I was losing strength, barely able to stand from the pain in my abdomen. My eyelids were heavy, and I felt like I was about to faint.
Andrew noticed my condition and punched John.
John, in pain, let go of me. I collapsed to the ground and lost consciousness.
"Enough! Can't you see Sophia is unwell? How can you be a doctor and just watch a patient suffer?"
Andrew scooped me up and carried me outside, while John, regaining his composure, shakily called emergency services.
