"What's in Varna?" Elia asked.

"It's a resort city on the Black Sea and rather inexpensive. The main thing is that we will be together," I answered.

"Who is looking after girls?" Elia inquired.

"First of all, most of us already have girls. You are with Silvia, Claudio has Roxana, I will be with a girl you don't know, Fabrizio is coming with Luciana and Angelo will look after himself as he's no longer with Mihaela. The only one who doesn't have a companion is Gert, but he hasn't confirmed he's coming," I answered.

"So it's just Gert that doesn't have anybody," Elia said.

"Yes, that's right."

"What about Sebastian?"Claudio asked.

"We didn't tell him anything," I answered. "He can go to hell. Have you forgotten what he did on our last trip?"

"That is why I am asking. Because if he is coming, you can count me out," Claudio said forcefully.

"He isn't coming," I stated.

We sat in the café just talking about this and that, when Elia asked suddenly, "What's going on with Fabrizio? He hasn't called home at all since he left. In the end he will surely be getting divorced. Isn't that a pity?"

"Fabrizio made his choice. Who are we to go against it, and besides, it will not help," I replied.

"Elia," I continued "You call Gert, and tell him that we have set the first of August as our target date. I will let Angelo and Fabrizio know. Angelo will surely come in his new jeep that he has just bought and we will have to rent one or two cars."

Just as we left the café, and stepped out onto Piazza San Francesco, it suddenly started to rain. We were forced to run home without even saying goodbye properly.

The next day I returned to work and found that everything was going just fine, albeit nothing fantastic. Our steady customers were ordering on a regular basis and we had even received some orders from the United States. Our main customers were from the former communist bloc; Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic. They were people who had gotten rich quickly and fine Italian jewelry befitted their nouveau-riche status.

My father hardly worked. He would come in every day and watch the foreman and the five jewelers who sat in the workshop casting and assembling the jewelry.

Sara was busy with her voluntary work in the city, organizing concerts in nursing homes and clubs for the elderly. At times she arranged for magicians or other entertainment, all to make their lives more pleasant.

Since I had started my new business and been on trips to Romania, my entire state of mind had changed, as I was constantly thinking about new business opportunities available to me over there. My feelings had also changed; I felt as if I were still young enough to meet a girl. I felt capable of being romantic, something that over the years had waned and nearly disappeared. Now it all returned and brought with it a renewed sense of youth.

Lately, Dorina has been rather distant towards me. Perhaps it's my imagination. I know she's your business associate, so I'm not worried about her feeling left out of the trip if I do go. I remember she even suggested that I come along with you.

I hope you will come to Romania before August so that we'll have time to get to know each other better. Please call me at the number on the bottom of this e-mail and we can nail down the days for me to take off work.

A little kiss, on account of the many kisses to come,

Yours,

Oana

I deleted the e-mail and went back to bed. I was lying in bed for about an hour thinking about what might develop between us. Many different scenarios popped into my mind that could throw me into a love trap and destroy my marriage.

In the morning, I found a new e-mail from Dorina

Dear Giorgio,

I would like to inform you that the work at Cismigiu is proceeding nicely and will probably be finished on schedule. I gave Giorgina the papers from the Land Registry office for the studio apartment and she gave me the money. The apartment will be registered in your name in less than a month.
