"Give me the keys to the apartment on Decebal," I told Dorina."As of now you aren't to enter there, as you no longer work for me."

"Who is going to pay the workers for the work they did last week?" she asked.

"You will," I answered.

I went down with Oana and we took a taxi to Decebal. On the way we stopped at a hardware store where I purchased a cylinder for a door lock and a screwdriver. When I got to the apartment, I found two old workers sleeping there. They were frightened when they saw me.

"Get out of the apartment quickly," I screamed at them. They didn't understand what was happening, but they took their belongings and left.

I changed the lock and went downstairs. The taxi was waiting for us, and he took us back to my apartment.

"I feel bad that you had to see this whole scene. However, in the meantime a thought occurred to me. I want to train you in how to do renovations, how to furnish, and how to collect rent. You will be my manager here in my absence. I already own four apartments and there is a lot of work. I will double your current salary," I told her.

Oana was as shocked as she was taken by surprise. I pulled out two hundred euros and gave it to her."Here is a small advance," I said.

The next morning, I noticed a text message on my phone.

Dear Giorgio,

I'm sorry about what happened. Please don't be angry at me. I was drunk and didn't really know what I was doing. You are very dear to me. Too bad it has to end this way.

Yours,

Mirella

I deleted the message and decided to ignore it. I realized that I was not doing this out of lack of concern, or anger or jealousy. I was doing it as a punishment. But whom was I punishing? Mirella? Myself? I found comfort in the arms of Oana, but was it love or an escape from another love?

"I cannot," he said. "You see, I didn't pay her salary for three months. She claims that the money she took is her salary. I cannot prove a thing, because I paid her off the books, so going to the police will not solve anything."

As we were talking there was a knock on the door, and we could see that the gypsy was standing there with two big guys. Fabrizio had to open the door, because she was able to see that he was there.

"What sort of games are you playing games with me?" she yelled. "You know that in the end you are going to lose. From now on, for every day that you don't pay, I want an additional one and a half percent. Do you understand? So decide, hurry and pay," she said.

Fabrizio tried to plead with her in a mixture of Italian and Romanian, and tell her all about his personal problems, but she wouldn't hear a word of it.

"The only word that will solve your problem is MONEY." She then added sarcastically, "We also accept gold, silver, and diamonds."

When the gypsy left, I asked Fabrizio if he would come with me Angelo and talk to him, perhaps he would have an idea. We took a taxi to Angelo's pizzeria, "Piccola Napoli," where we met Mihaela who was happy to see us. She had remained good friends with Angelo even after their break-up and carried on working for him.

We sat in a quiet corner and waited for Angelo to arrive. Since it was early, the pizzeria was still closed.
