"I love all these compliments you are throwing my way," she said.

"Don't you deserve them?" I said to her.

"Possibly, but what's the use, as I see that you don't forgive me," she remarked.

"The fact is that I did come back to you. You are right, I didn't forgive, but I am willing to put everything aside for now," I answered.

"We are very similar to each other," was her response.

"Maybe, but I'm honest. I would never steal from someone I'm working with," I said.

"Why do you always bring that up? We hardly ever meet and you don't give me any work," she complained.

"It was entirely your fault. I gave you several opportunities and you always disappointed me," I said.

"Nevertheless you came back to me," she countered.

"I'm considering the offer, but I am not sure I will take it," I said.

"Well, you decide and let me know by tomorrow or the day after at the latest," she said very curtly. "Sorry but I must leave now, I have a meeting in town."

We parted very coldly and I went my own way. I decided to walk to my apartment, for I wanted to buy covrigi, a kind of Romanian pretzel, on the way and plus, it would afford me an opportunity to think a bit.

As soon as I got home, Angelo called me to find out why I had not come over last night. I excused myself by saying that I had fallen asleep.

"If you would like to, we can meet today. Come to the pizzeria whenever you want, I will be here all day," he suggested.

On my way to the pizzeria I passed a real-estate brokerage office, one that I had not known about. Although the agent was on the phone, he immediately hung up, turned to me and asked, "How can I help you?"

"Could you kindly tell me how much apartments in Cismigiu are selling for?"

He analyzed the situation wisely. I had actually thought the same, I just wanted reassurance.

"Angelo, what do we do with our friend Claudio and the sorcery?" I asked.

"It's a very serious problem. I suggest that when you go back to Italy, tell him that you convinced her to remove the spell. Prepare a letter that looks like it's from Roxanna stating that the spell has been removed," he suggested.

I liked the idea, and decided to do it. I wanted to continue my conversation with Angelo, but he was too busy and had to start serving customers.

When I was ready to leave, I called the waitress over so that I could pay her. She told me that she had instructions not to charge me. I left her a ten-euro tip, waved good-bye to Angelo and left.

I was quite a distance from my apartment and, as I was tired, I took a taxi home instead of walking. Every time we passed a church, the driver would cross himself and say a short prayer. I noticed that hanging from the mirror he had pictures of his family as well as his dog decorated with the rosary prayer on small wooden crosses.

It seemed to me that the meter was moving insanely fast. I had heard that most of the taxi meters were not honest, but since the amount was not that excessive, I didn't complain. The trip home cost me fifty lei[About $ 15].
