I had to hold myself upright to keep from being bowled over.
I instinctively answered, "Sure."
"How do we go about it?" I asked.
"The buyer will pay ten percent right now. He would like to draw up a temporary contract today. After the apartment has been vacated and the final contract is signed, he will pay the balance in the presence of the lawyers. He doesn't care that Giorgina represents both sides. It's quite an acceptable practice in Romania."
Being totally confused, I asked, "So what do we do now?"
"Come right over to the real-estate agent's office on Alba Julia square, the same one you bought the apartment from. The buyer and I are waiting for you," she said.
I ran downstairs like a rocket and took the first taxi I saw.
"Piata Alba Julia," I told him. "Drive fast."
My adrenaline was really working hard. I still could not believe the price. As we got closer I had to force myself to calm down and not show too much excitement.
I entered the office and greeted everybody. The buyer was sitting at the head of the table and seemed very tense.
Oana called me out for a moment and said to me, "Giorgio, you don't have to pay the agent anything as I already took care of it all. You only pay me and the buyer will pay the agent," she said to me.
I wanted to jump on her and kiss her right there on the street, but I held myself back.
"Oana," I said, "Tonight we are going to celebrate like never before."
As soon as we went back inside, the buyer asked if I was willing to lower the price in order to complete the transaction.
With a serious face, I told him that in reality I was not at all happy with the price that my agent and the broker "cooked" up for me, so I surely was not going to go down in price.
Before I could finish my sentence he suddenly said, "So let's close now the deal at one hundred and sixty thousand euros."
"I agree," I said, "But I want a down payment."
"We agreed upon a ten percent down payment," he said and pulled out a wad of cash from his pocket.
"However, I would like the agent to hold on to the money until the deal is signed," the buyer said.
"I have no problem with that," I answered.
Dear Claudio,
I am very sorry if I offended you when we last met. Between my love for you and my uncontrollable jealousy, I cast a spell on you. I apologize for what I did and am removing the spell immediately.
I want you to have a good and peaceful life and continue loving your wife.
Don't forget our love, which will stay with me always.
Yours forever,
Roxana
I folded the letter and put it into my bag.
Oana didn't ask questions. She quickly got dressed and left. I didn't ask her where she was rushing to, but I knew that she was trying to find work for the next day.
I went to meet Giorgina, my lawyer. I relayed to her the details of the sale and gave her the phone number of the broker. When she heard the selling price her eyes widened, for she remembered what I purchased it for.
