"Could you please call him," I said.

Angelo walked over to the counter where his phone was and called the seller. After a long conversation, he turned to me and said, "He agreed to sell for forty thousand euros in cash, but the contract must state a lesser amount." I agreed.

I asked Angelo not to tell anybody that he was involved in the deal, especially not Gert. I told him that I wanted to arrange it so that Oana earns commission on the sale, thereby leaving her with some money in her pocket.

"She is really a wonderful girl," I said.

Angelo promised to keep it a secret.

I asked Oana to come with me to see the apartment and meet the seller. We took a taxi to the apartment and in ten minutes we were there.

The building was not in the best condition, everything was old and utilities were hardly in working condition. The apartment which was on the second floor was one hundred and twenty square meters but had a nice outlay. With a minimum amount of money, it could be renovated and turned into a luxury apartment.

I made up to meet the seller the next morning at my attorney's office.

I withdrew forty thousand euros in cash from my account and went straight to Giorgina's office, where the seller was already waiting for us with all the papers.

He was not too pleased at having to pay a broker's commission to Oana and argued that it was Angelo who brought me the deal and Angelo was not demanding any commission. I told him that indeed Angelo brought the deal, but a broker brought the deal to Angelo, so he must pay half the going commission rate. He finally agreed to pay three thousand euros to cover all expenses. I paid him thirty-seven thousand euros in cash and he signed the contract, where the sale was recorded at twenty thousand euros.

When we left the attorney's office, I said to Oana, "Your job now is to find a buyer for the apartment. Go to all the local real estate agents and offer the apartment to them for one hundred thousand euros."

"For one hundred thousand euros?" a shocked Oana asked.

"It doesn't matter how much I bought it for. You offer it for one hundred thousand Euros," I answered.

That evening we went to eat at the White Horse restaurant, whose deliciously sweet ribs were still etched in my memory. I reminded Oana that this was the restaurant where Dorina had introduced us.

The next morning, Oana went around to various real-estate agents to offer the apartment. I had given her the keys, in the event that she had to show it.

Amidst all her excitement, I told her to please sit down in front of me.

She looked frightened and nervously asked, "What happened?"

"Nothing happened," I said. "Please sit down; I want to talk to you."

She sat across from me, pale and tense, waiting for me to speak.

"Oana," I began, "As I have already explained, with your help we will sell all my apartments in Bucharest and I will return to my old life in Italy."

"I understand, but why do you have to spoil the moment?" she asked.

"I am not spoiling anything," I replied."I want to help you before I leave. I have decided that I want to use part of the profit from the sale of the apartment to buy you a nice, small apartment and also to leave you with some spending money."
