Oana keeled over momentarily, as though fainting. When she came up , her face was pale and sweaty and her hands were shaking.

"I don't want anything. You pay me for my services above and beyond what any other agent pays. I don't want anything more than the help I have already received from you," she said.

"Whether you like it or not, that's what I have decided. Go and find yourself a nice small apartment in a good neighborhood for approximately 30,000 euros. The balance we will put into your savings account at the bank," I told her.

"I have no bank account and never had one," she responded.

I smiled and replied, "It takes five minutes to open an account. All you need is your IDcard and to deposit some money."

I was off to the bank to withdraw the funds that I needed in order to pay for the apartment. I went to Giorgina's office, gave her the details for the contract and instructed her to register the apartment directly from the seller to the name of the English buyer.

Meanwhile, Oana went searching for an apartment for herself.

I felt elated, on a high, since now I had a clear conscience. I would not have to walk around the rest of my life thinking that I had used and exploited a young girl in Bucharest by making a fortune off her and then walking away and leaving her in poverty. After all, she was loyal and totally honest. I owed it to her and to myself.

I was worn out and tired and not in the mood of leaving my apartment, so I ate a sandwich that I had bought in a café earlier in the day. At ten o'clock at night, when I was nearly asleep, Oana suddenly appeared. I opened my eyes, and asked her what time it was. With a grin of happiness on her face, she said to me, "I found a cute apartment for 25,000 euros including all the furniture, except the television. I have an option for a few days."

"Congratulations," I said and we talked a while. We fell asleep shortly afterward.

Everything I knew about Oana's past I had learned from Dorina. Oana never told me anything about herself. Whenever I asked her personal questions she would become silent and change the subject. On the other hand, she never questioned me about my personal life. Whatever she knew I had told her myself.

"So, are we're going to buy an apartment?" I asked with a smile.

She smiled shyly and said, "Are you sure you want to do this?"

We left the apartment and went to a café to get something to eat, when the phone rang. Dorina was on the line.

"Popescu called me, and we made plans to go to Mihailesti tomorrow afternoon. I understand that you are not interested in a deal, so I will offer him all the plots," she said. "Is that OK with you?"
