Within a few minutes, Angela felt Steven's chest rise and fall in steady breathing. He had fallen asleep. Steven who could go more than a full day without any rest had fallen asleep. She guessed it had been the sudden optimistic mood that caused him to shut his eyes and loosen up. She couldn't help but smile up at him as she looked at his relaxed face and watched him for a moment.

Angela was then reminded of the Steven she had married and compared him to the sleeping man within her proximity. At that moment, for a reason surprising even to her, Angela saw them as the same man. She couldn't see the man who had hurt her. That man was... gone. All she saw was the same arms that were around her to hold her, the same shoulder she rested on and she felt the same beating heart. And that surprising reason was the same one causing the aching tugs on her heart.

She set her hand at his face, looked at him. Goodness, he was so handsome. She reached up, careful of not waking him, and pressed her lips on the corner of his own.

"I love you." She whispered as her eyes shut to the sudden emotion that hit her.

She loved him. As much as she could deny it, she still loved him. She always did. Immensely. And she knew she always will.

When a sigh escaped his lips, Angela expected him to open his eyes. She thought he had heard her confession. But he didn't wake. Until just seconds later, his eyes flew wide open.

Flustered, Steven's eyes met hers then immediately went to look behind her, then at the door suddenly burst open and at the doctor and nurses dashing inside.

It was the sound of the machines wired to Jack's body that had woken Steven. The beeping had been going faster and more frequently.

The urgent voice of the doctor calling out orders at the nurses surrounding Jack's bed alerted Angela from her reverie. She gasped audibly. Oh, no. Her father...

She made to stand up but a tight hold on her waist sat her back down. Arms wrapped around her and buried her head to a warm chest, hiding her from seeing the hurried movements around her. A sob escaped and another. The beeping was becoming louder and much faster. Bravely, she peaked at the team of people doing their utmost to steady the rhythm of the beeping. Until they stopped and the beep became one long sound.

Steven sat behind his desk, completely immersed in the conversation with the voice on the other side of the phone call. The deep etched frown on his face mirrored his exhaustion. He stifled a yawn and stretched his legs beneath the table when a light knock sounded and John quietly proceeded in with a fresh cup of steaming black coffee. After Steven's assistant would leave the office at five, John would come up just in case he'd need any assistance rather than sit in the lobby and every hour to the dot, he'd come in with a caffeine boost for Steven. Steven checked his desk clock. It was seven in the evening.

When John began pacing along the room, Steven countered that something urgent required his attention. John never remained in his office after the coffee delivery, especially when he was on the phone. So Steven wrapped up his call.

"What is it, John?"
