Lily drifted off to sleep, her hand intertwined with mine. I carefully slipped my hand free, trying not to wake her. Hours crawled by. Then, her phone shattered the silence. She silenced it before the first ring finished.

“Jason…”

I kept my eyes closed, feigning sleep.

She nudged me. “Emergency at work. I have to go in. If it’s a quick fix, I’ll be back by morning.”

I opened my eyes blearily. “Want me to drive you?”

“Nah, I’m good. I’m picking up Aurora from the product team on the way. I’ll text you when I get to the office.” She pecked my cheek and left the room.

I heard the front door click shut. I threw on some clothes and rushed downstairs, hailing a cab.

The address from Lily’s Amazon account led me to a high-rise. The guy's Instagram was a chaotic mess of fancy dinners, gaming marathons, designer clothes, limited edition sneakers – he was a posting machine. But his face was always hidden in his selfies, obscured by his phone.

I zoomed in on one of his gaming screenshots. And then it hit me. I knew that gamer tag. I’d asked Lily to team up with me in a game once, and this guy was on our squad.
