"ANSWER ME!"
"I-I," I wheezed. "I don't k-know."
"LIAR!"
"Captain! You're killing her!"
He briefly turned a scornful look to his men. "Who's to say her death won't reveal it to us?"
I felt my head coming close to exploding and then it went away. I wondered if this was what dying by strangulation felt like. It wasn't as terrifying as it seemed in the movies. Once your body stops fighting, you go without a hitch.
My vision faded and all I saw was white, still, it was unfocus. I blinked and I blinked and I blinked. The white was still there. A voice was calling out to me but I didn't recognize it. "Hanna..." it went on, and I willed my hands to slap my face but they wouldn't move. "Don't try to move, child. It's no use."
"W-who are you? I can't see anything!"
"That is because I made it so."
"Wh-"
"For the simple fact that it is not necessary."
"Can you at least tell me who you are?"
"I am you mother's grandfather. I have been waiting a very long time to meet you, Hanna. From the day you were born, I knew you'd be the one to set things right."
"You're the one that started this war then."
"That's where you are mistaken. I have been watching my people for many years, and it hurts my soul to witness how sick they've become. I never wanted to banish the Raiders, but your mother came to me in tears begging that I did so. She cried a tale of unending sorrow and misfortune that would befall the next queen."
"You're lying. My mother said the Raiders were killing people-"
"That also was true. The Raiders were driven by their hate for the castle, but it wasn't a problem that couldn't be fixed. Unfortunately, the spell happened to have magnified the problem. It corrupted them. They've become mad.
Your mother had a vision of the distant future and all things that bred disaster led back to the Raiders. I thought keeping them away would protect everyone. What she failed to inform me was that she was running from someone specific. Your father. Even since she was a little girl, she kept talking about this man she would see in her dream. She said he fell to the harshness of the world but he had a pure heart. I had asked her what she thought of the man, and her reply was always the same. 'We must never meet.' "
"But they still did."
"And she tried to save him."
"And he still died."
"And she tried to save you."
"But she couldn't."
"I guess," the man paused. "It may seem that the fates bid this your path. Sorrow and unending fortune befalls you."
"What can I do to stop it?"
"Your fate is unavoidable," his voice began to fade. "but the people of Tylon can still be saved. Free them, Hanna. Free them all..."
"How? What do I do?"
"It's in the book," he voiced whisked away. "The blood... only heirs blood can free them from this madness..."
"...Wake up! Hanna!"
It felt like everything inside my head was being compressed and I was being pulled from the luxury of my dreams to face a pulsating hangover.
