I then heard screams and footsteps down the hall that wasn't far enough away from us.
"Charlie, I need to wake up or we'll both be dead. If we die, so does everyone else. Even Angela."
And as if he'd long to hear those words, he's resurrected like he was coming from death.
He cradled his head in his hands and hissed in pain. "What about Angela?"
"You've got to be kidding me..." I muttered under my breath. "Forget it," I then say, "Angela is fine, but we won't be if we don't make it to the fire in time."
I pulled his arms around my shoulder and helped him up. We made for the center of the altar again, the footsteps I heard before sounding closer than ever.
"We have to hurry!"
He grunted. "I'm trying!"
As we went up the small steps I heard a bang on the door. My barricade wasn't going to last forever and judging by the number of footsteps I've heard, it won't.
When we finally made it to the center, the fire was reduced to three red colds close to burning out.
"It's gone," Charlie swallowed. "What now?"
"As long as there's a spark, there is life."
I offered him my hand and he nodded in understanding. His claws extended and slid one of them across my palm, splitting the skin. Crimson ooze out and I held it over the basin and drizzle my blood onto the colds. Charlie did the same after me and we both watch as the fire finally burnt out.
The door burst open and five Raiders emerged. Their weapons were aimed at us and I no down was waiting to be released.
"I thought you said this would work?" Charlie whispered viciously.
"It was supposed to! I don't know what happened."
"Maybe we were too late?"
At Charlie's words, I felt my back get singed by the roaring fire behind us. We turned around to see the fire shoot up into the sky through a pillar of light.
I heard weapons being thrown down and I turned around to see the Raiders kneeling down before us.
Charlie leaned over to me. "What are they doing?"
"I don't know." My brows furrowed.
They began weeping, and I squeezed Charlie's hand, but not even he understood what was taking place.
