I smirked. "You mean Angela?"
Charlie rolled his eyes.
"I still can't believe she's your mate," I went on. "Judging from her track record, that's the biggest plot twist of the century."
"Now, you're exaggerating."
"If you'd known the girl I met, you'd understand why we're all uneasy around her."
"That was her past and before she met me. Everyone deserves a second chance and the opportunity to start over."
"I guess."
We arrived at the rendezvous point last and everyone was sitting around and chatting. Probably waiting for us.
Charlie left saying he was off to help with the injured and I couldn't help but smile at him in his injured state.
"Hanna!"
I turned around and saw Sage in the distance, looking worn to the bone, but alive. We both were.
I finally released a breath I didn't know I was holding and waved at him. I started jogging over to meet him when all of a sudden, something tore through my abdomen. I shuffled to a stop and my hand reached down to a warm substance. My hand shook as I stared at the blood, half not believing I was hit and half not believing it was mine.
Before I could fully crash to my knees, Sage caught me and pulled me into his lap. My eyes welled up in tears once I heard his pained voice yelling for help as his hands applied pressure to the wound. For some reason, everything was moving so slow and he sounded so far away. I felt colder even though it was so warm where we were, and it scared me that I didn't feel connected to Sage anymore.
"Stay with me, Hanna! Stay with me!"
If forever had an expiration date, it would be now.
Can't say that I saw this one coming, but I wasn't really surprised. I had a feeling I wasn't going to make it ever since my mother died for me. People kept getting hurt, all at my expense, and it made me realize you can never cheat death. You can never outrun the inevitable because eventually, it all catches up to you.
My mother's premonition just so happens to finally come to pass.
Everyone was panicking, but no matter how much I wanted to, I couldn't tell them I was okay. Because I wasn't. I was scared, and I didn't want to die.
Yet it felt like I was dying.
It wasn't fair. We finally found peace, and I won't be around to see it last. I won't be able to wake up tomorrow and actually not worry about who we might lose. I won't have a future anymore and Sage won't be in it. We won't...
"No! You're not leaving me," Sage cried. I felt the tears running down the side of my face like they would never stop. Like I was actually slipping away from him.
"I don't want to," I sniffled, my lips trembling as next words leave my mouth, "b-but I don't feel it anymore-I can't feel anything," I cried.
He wrapped his arms around me, and I've never felt so warm. It felt so gentle. "You promised me! You.. you promised..."
"I'm sorry,"
His grip on me tightened as if he felt like he could keep me here if he didn't let go.
"It wasn't supposed to be like this. You were supposed to be fine and everything was supposed to be perfect. I was supposed to find you in the crowd and drag you away from everyone. I was supposed to get down one knee behind you and surprise you with this," he gently lifted my hand and slip a diamond ring on my finger. "I was supposed to ask you to spend the rest of you life with me and you were supposed to say-"
"Yes," I croaked, staring at the ring like the biggest fool in the world. Sage tears fell on my cheek, like a resonance to the past. It all began with the death of my father and will now end with the death of myself.
"Y-your hair..." he sniffled. "It's dark again."
I feigned a smile, knowing exactly what it meant. "I guess I-I'm me again," I cried. "Just Hanna."
"You're much more than that. From the day I saw you, I could tell you were special. You are everything to me. You're the reason I'm they way I am now. I need you."
I swallowed, my saliva harboring a metallic substance. "I h-have to g-go now," My lips trembled, my heart heavy.
"Hanna, no..."
My bloody hand stroke his cheek, already missing him. "P-please don't be s-sad...I still got t-to be your wife. E-even if it was f-for a little w-while."
"I love you so much, you hear me?"
I nodded.
