She was leading her group back to her office floor when she ran into Benedict in the elevator.

Benedict, still sour from his failed meeting with Dominic, wore a stormy expression. His gaze darkened as he noticed Cynthia flanked by several unfamiliar faces.

“What’s all this about?” he demanded.

Cynthia caught the displeasure in his eyes—obviously, his trip to Dominic hadn’t yielded any benefits. She smirked. “What else? I’m hiring a few capable people for myself.”

Benedict’s frown deepened. “VistaSphere Group is having financial problems right now. We should be thinking about downsizing, not bringing on new staff.”

Cynthia arched an eyebrow, her tone cool. “Then perhaps we should start by letting go of your dead weight. The people I’m hiring are all exceptional—unlike your pet favorites who barely pull their weight.”

Benedict’s face stiffened. He shot another look at the number of people crowding the elevator, his expression suddenly shifting. “Are you trying to set up a whole new executive office for yourself?”

Cynthia glanced at him sideways. “As the company’s Vice President, it’s not unreasonable for me to have a few extra assistants, is it?”

Benedict’s eyes narrowed.

Just then, the elevator stopped at his floor.

Cynthia spoke softly to her group, “Step aside for Mr. Shepard.”

The employees immediately parted to let Benedict through.

His hand clenched at his side as he brushed past Cynthia, his eyes flickering with suspicion. He stepped out of the elevator, brushing the spot on his suit jacket that had been jostled, then glanced back at Cynthia, who was still inside.

She shot him a confident smile, her eyes full of quiet assurance.

Benedict knew exactly what that look meant. Cynthia was already plotting to oust him from his position at VistaSphere Group.
