Even on the weekend, Tiffany couldn't get any real rest at home. Work messages poured in almost nonstop from morning to night. By the time she finished responding to them, evening had already settled in.

When Barry Murdock called, Tiffany was reviewing a case file. The matter fell outside her strongest area of expertise, but she still wanted to take a crack at it.

"Mr. Chopard from Ristar Real Estate is our firm's top client target for next year. Come have dinner with us tonight. Consider it a favor to me."

Tiffany had no desire to go. She knew Ristar Real Estate's reputation. Giovanni wasn't well regarded in their circle, and in some ways, his reputation was even worse than people said.

Even so, Barry was her boss, and he had always treated her well.

"Sure. Send me the address."

The dinner was scheduled at a private club near the firm that had only recently opened. By the time Tiffany arrived, eight people were already seated in the private room.

Barry waved her over to the empty seat beside him. "Tiff, sit here."

The moment she sat down, Giovanni's gaze locked onto her. He looked a little under 50, with slicked-back hair that gleamed under the lights and a pendant hanging from his neck.

"Miss Voss, I've been hearing about you for quite a while. Old Barry's got a beautiful lawyer working under him." He poured a glass of liquor and slid it toward her. His smile narrowed his eyes into slits. "It's our first time meeting. Let me offer a toast."

Tiffany didn't touch the glass. "Mr. Chopard, I drove here. Would orange juice be acceptable instead?"

Giovanni's smile faltered. "You can call an Uber since you drove and come the next day for your car. Miss Voss, are you really not going to humor me?"

Barry quickly stepped in. "Mr. Chopard, Tiffany really can't handle her liquor. Let me drink on her behalf."

"Mr. Murdock, I want Miss Voss to toast me. Not you."

The private room fell silent.

Tiffany looked at the glass, picked it up, and drained it in one swallow.

Satisfied, Giovanni draped an arm across the back of her chair. "Now that's more like it."
