He led me out of the mansion, moving quickly as if wanting to put as much distance as possible between us and his sister. He continued the tour, showing me all the significant places in his kingdom. There were a lot of them.
I didn’t know what to make of all this. None of it was what I had expected. This place was… warm. The people were friendly. It didn’t feel like the business trip I had planned. It felt more like the vacation I desperately needed.
And that was bad. It was distracting me from my main goal.
“Can we talk about business?” I finally asked as we stood by a river at sunset. The light was golden and beautiful, reflecting off the water.
“Of course,” Jacob agreed, though I could sense his disappointment. “Ask me anything.”
“My divorce with Maximus—”
“Consider it done,” he responded quickly. “As soon as you bring it up at the Alpha summit, I’ll approve it.”
“And my pack?” I looked at him, hope filling my eyes. I didn’t want him to lead me on.
“That will be more challenging,” he admitted. “To regain your pack, we’ll need to work more on the new law and make sure everyone supports it. But once it’s in place, nothing will stand in your way.”
“Thank you,” I said, smiling sincerely at him. He leaned in closer, and for a moment, I thought he was going to kiss me.
“You mentioned you’d want something in return for your help,” I reminded him, looking into his clear blue eyes. “Now that I’m here, can you tell me what it is?”
He seemed to think about it. I could see he wanted me to reciprocate his feelings, but he wasn’t ready to say it out loud.
Then, an idea seemed to strike him.
“Yes, there is something,” he said, a sly smile forming on his face.
“What is it?” I asked, curious but also cautious.
“I want to help you get your wolf back,” he revealed, surprising me.
“Wh-why?” I managed to stammer out, then quickly added, “How?”
“I don’t know,” he admitted with a shrug, a devilish grin appearing. “We’ll have to experiment and see what works. As for why… sometimes people lose their wolves. I want to know if it’s possible to get them back and how. It could be good research.”
“Oh.” I felt a pang of sadness. That wasn’t what I wanted to hear.
“It’s getting late,” I said, trying to change the subject. “And I’m tired. Maybe we should call it a day?”
“Of course,” he agreed, taking my hand again without asking. This was starting to bother me. Why did he keep doing that? We weren’t a couple. He’d just said he wanted me for research. Maybe that was what made him a great king. Still, I couldn’t help but feel disappointed.
