“You too, Luna,” he responded, throwing a wink at Jacob. He wasn’t supposed to call me Luna—I wasn’t his—but he ignored the look I gave him. “I’ll take your bags, Luna,” he offered, grabbing my luggage from the driver.
“Thank you.” I smiled softly.
“No problem,” he chuckled, then added with a grin, “Hmm, it smells nice too.”
Jacob growled again, unable to hide his annoyance. Richard was probably joking, but the idea of him looking at me like that seemed to push Jacob’s buttons.
“Relax, my king,” Richard said with a wink. “I’m just being polite.”
We walked a few steps toward what looked like a mansion, but that word didn’t do it justice. It was more of a palace—a modern, stunning palace.
Jacob, ever the gentleman, held the door open for me. I stepped inside, doing my best not to gasp at the sight of the dazzling white marble. The design was simple yet clearly expensive. I couldn’t help but admire it.
“Is that her?” a cheerful voice called out. I looked up to see a young girl rushing down the stairs, followed by a slightly older boy. The girl was a cute brunette with wavy hair, a lot like Jacob’s.
But it was the red-haired boy I recognized immediately.
Our eyes met, and I saw the recognition in his. He was the same boy I had saved seven years ago, only now he was nearly a man.
“Katherine!” The girl flung herself at me, breaking my train of thought with her enthusiastic hug. “I’ve heard so much about you! Finally, we meet!”
“Manners, Savannah,” Jacob muttered, running a hand over his face in frustration. He shot a glare at Richard, who had obviously told her everything. His sister was terrible at keeping secrets.
“Sorry,” Savannah giggled, clearly not sorry at all. “I got excited. It’s not every day my brother finds his—”
Richard suddenly coughed loudly, interrupting her. “Savvy!”
“His... allies,” she quickly corrected herself, her awkward smile giving her away. “—to our home! We owe you so much! I’m Savannah, Jacob’s sister.”
“You don’t owe me anything,” I replied with a graceful smile. “It’s wonderful to meet you, Princess.”
“Just call me Savvy.” She nudged the boy beside her, whispering, “Come on! Say hi! It’s her!”
He smiled shyly and offered his hand.
“Do you remember me?” he asked. He reminded me of Richard—the same handsome features and red hair, but there was a sweetness to him. He wasn’t like his uncle.
“How could I forget?” I smiled. “You’ve grown so much since I last saw you, Tyler.”
“Luna,” he greeted, bowing slightly and kissing my fingers like a true gentleman.
“Yeah, about that,” Richard said, clearing his throat. “It’s already planned, and we can’t cancel it.”
“What were you two thinking?” Jacob growled through the mind-link.
“Take it easy, J,” Richard’s expression turned serious. “That’s not our biggest issue right now. Trust me.”
“What’s going on?” Jacob asked, slowing his pace.
“There’s something I need to discuss with you.” Richard stopped in the hallway, letting Savannah and me continue ahead.
As Jacob and Richard spoke in hushed tones, I could sense the tension in the room. Something serious was going on, but I was too far away to hear the details. Jacob’s furrowed brow and the way Richard leaned against the wall with his hands in his pockets told me enough—it wasn’t good news.
“It’s the East border again,” Richard said with a sigh. “I had to send two squads there this morning after you left. Reports came in about local packs training with foxes and werebears right next to our territory.”
I felt a chill run down my spine at the mention of foxes and werebears. These creatures were typically enemies. If they were training together, it could only mean trouble.
“Foxes and werebears?” Jacob rubbed his clean-shaven chin, a look of concern crossing his face. I noticed that he had shaved. Was he… Trying to impress me?
Foxes, werebears, and werewolves generally hated each other. Their animosity was almost legendary, and keeping them from fighting was always a challenge. Yet, here they were, working together. That could only mean one thing—they had a common enemy. Richard and Jacob knew this was a sign of something brewing.
