“Why are you lying on my bed?” I demanded, mustering all my strength to lift my chin and meet his gaze. He just gave me a crooked smile.

“Isn’t it obvious?” he asked calmly.

“Not really.” I crossed my arms, trying to keep my composure. He didn’t move.

“I’m staying here to keep you company,” he said simply.

“In my bed?” I almost shouted, but he stayed calm.

“Why not?” he asked bluntly. “I’m already here, and you just had a nightmare that sounded like someone was trying to kill you.”

I felt my face go pale. He had no idea how close to the truth he was.

But I couldn’t let him stay.

“You need to leave,” I sighed, suddenly feeling exhausted.

“Give me one good reason why I should.” Our eyes locked, and I realized I didn’t have one. So, I went with the usual excuse.

“It’s inappropriate,” I said. He chuckled softly. He seemed to like that I was holding my ground. Most other she-wolves would have jumped at the chance to share his bed. He wouldn’t even need to ask; one look was usually enough.

But not me. I had self-respect. Unless there was another reason?

“Do you love your soon-to-be ex-husband?” he asked, and I could tell he hated saying it out loud.

“No,” I replied quickly, then covered my mouth, realizing I’d answered too soon.

“Then what’s the problem? I’ll stay and guard you at night, that’s it,” he smirked. “I won’t touch you… unless you ask me to.”

“As I’ve already said,” I reiterated, exhaling sharply to show my frustration, “It’s not proper for us to sleep like this. I mean… I’m hardly wearing anything.”

“Doesn’t bother me,” he countered with a grin. I let out an exasperated sigh.

“But you can practically see—” I began, but he cut me off.
