“Yes, it’s rare,” he acknowledged calmly, “but there are exceptions. And you’re going to be one of them.”

“Why?” I laughed nervously, not sure what to believe.

“I have my reasons,” he said. For a second, it seemed like he wanted to say something more, but he held back. I could see the conflict in his eyes.

Was it too soon to tell me? Did he think I wouldn’t believe him?

“So, is that why you’re helping me?” I tilted my head, trying to understand.

“It’s one of the reasons,” he admitted. “But not all of them are personal. I’d still pursue you, even if I decided not to help you get your pack back after the divorce.”

“That would be a challenge,” I teased, a small smile tugging at my lips despite myself.

“I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve,” he said confidently. I had to admit, his confidence was something else.

But it still didn’t make sense. He was a powerful Lycan King, and I was—right now—just a Luna in name only. I had nothing to offer him, so why did he want me so badly?

Then there was the issue of my broken heart. Maximus had shattered it. Could I even let another man in? But when I looked at Jacob, I couldn’t deny the temptation.

There were too many questions swirling in my mind. Why hadn’t he just claimed me if he wanted me so much? Some Alphas were like that—arrogant, taking what they wanted without asking. I hated that kind. For the first time, I doubted my decision to visit the Lycan Kingdom.

“Look,” he said softly, sensing my hesitation. “I won’t force you into anything. You’ll always have a choice if that’s what you’re worried about. But maybe we could get to know each other better while you’re here? I guess what I’m asking is for a chance.”

I hesitated, my thoughts a tangled mess. Was this what I wanted? Could I trust him?

Then, as if out of nowhere, a voice echoed in my mind.

“Trust him,” Aila said firmly, making me gasp.

“What’s wrong?” Jacob asked, his voice sharp with concern. I could feel his eyes on me, but I could barely process his words.

Our pack, The Silver River, was known for its wealth, but the Lycan territory was on another level. The houses were enormous and elegant, surrounded by fountains and intricate sculptures. Gardens stretched endlessly, manicured to perfection. Everything here spoke of luxury and power, confirming that lycans were indeed the elite of the shifter world.

I watched warriors train, children play, and couples stroll hand in hand. It was a cheerful, lively place, nothing like what I had imagined. Before I met Jacob, I thought of Lycans as cold, distant, and powerful beings. Seeing them in these ordinary, everyday moments felt almost surreal.

“Ready?” Jacob asked, hesitating slightly as he opened the door. Was he nervous about my reaction?

He stepped out first and offered me his hand. I accepted, stepping out of the car and looking around with a polite smile. I noticed how everyone stopped to look at me. It was more attention than I had anticipated, but I was used to being in the spotlight. I could handle this.

“Your territory is beautiful,” I said genuinely, and I saw his smile widen even more.

“I’m glad you think so,” he replied, his tone warm. I could sense he wanted to say more, but he held back. I also noticed him growl softly at those staring, a silent command to mind their own business. They quickly averted their gazes and returned to what they were doing.

“You made it!” Richard’s voice boomed as he approached, arms outstretched like he wanted to hug me, but a growl from Jacob made him stop.

“Beta Richard,” I greeted with a nod. “Nice to see you again.”
