"I truly have missed her. We should have lunch sometime." She says like she is making a mental note and then returns her gaze back to her son.
"So, brief me. How much progress has been made since we last spoke?"
Michael adjusts nervously in his seat and Genevieve can tell already that his response won't be pleasant to her frail ears.
"Well I have a plan. I have a woman, she is going to be my surrogate." He begins.
Genevieve raises a brow. "You have found a woman who has agreed to carry your child?"
"Yes." Michael lies, he couldn't tell Genevieve the truth. She would scream herself into a heart attack and worst of all, she would force him to move on from Veronica and find a new surrogate. He would handle the issue before she got to finding out.
"That's good. Do you intend on marrying this woman?" She takes off her glasses and places them on her side table.
Michael sighs. "Mother, you know that isn't happening. I've told you."
Genevieve laughs to herself causing Michael to cock his head to one side in curiosity.
She wondered how terrible and mind scarring she and Jeremiah's marriage must have been to cause her favorite son to decide that he would rather die than stand at the alter.
"What is so funny, ma?" He asks with sincere curiosity.
She's still recovering from her imminent amusement when she raises her head to meet his eyes that are desperately searching hers for a meaningful answer.
"You didn't bother to read the fine print, did you?" She laughs some more as she dabs the sides of her eyes with a handkerchief.
"Mother, talk sense." He pleads.
Genevieve sighs. "You can't have a bastard child, Michael. Jeremiah didn't spell out marriage in bold but he definitely found another way to make sure that you get hitched, come hell or high water."
Michael rises up, his eyes burning with fury. His father was dead but still tried to control his life from the grave. The nerve of that man, He thinks to himself.
"That is not happening! This is where I draw the line!" He yells in an exasperated voice.
Genevieve flinches at his tone. "Don't yell at the messenger, Michael. Jeremiah isn't too far away, you can take your fury to the cemetery." She slowly enunciates the word cemetery.
"Mother, this isn't funny. I'm not resorting to marriage ."
