"No, Doctor, Daniel doesn't have any siblings."
"Well, then, we will check the donor's registry for a match then."
"What about me?" Steven blurted.
Angela stared at Steven. Searched his face for any lack of seriousness. No, he wasn't joking. He was dead serious.
"Mr. Morris, I must tell you a parent-child match is rare." Dr. Gibbs noted.
"We can still check though, right?" Steven insisted.
"Of course, we can."
"Steven," Angela's tender hand set on Steven's thigh. Her face had soften since. "This is one of those times where you can't always win, Steve. You with all your power and all your money might not win."
"I have to do the test." Steven sustained his words.
"You might not be a match. It's like a one in a million chance."
Steven took the hand on his lap in both his hands. The anger he had towards her had subsided and had been replaced with warmth. "I have to try. I'm Daniel's father. I have to know if I can help him myself. Tell me you yourself haven't done the test, Angela."
"Of course I did." As soon as the words rolled off her tongue, Angela realized what she had said. She had obviously done the test because she was his mother and one of the possible eligible related donor. Steven as his father had the same chances as her and it was just as obvious for him as well to do the test.
"Angela, I care for that boy just as much as you. I will do this test and we will search for a donor too. I promise you I'll do anything that is possible so I can win. We will win."
And somehow, even knowing that neither of them had any say in the outcome of this, Angela believed Steven.
"Um..." What should she tell a four-year-old when she guessed his new best friend forgotten about having made him a promise? "He had to work early."
"But he promised he'd make me chocolate toast." Suddenly, his hands flew to cover his mouth. Oops, he shouldn't have said that.
"You weren't going to tell me? Did Steven tell you not to tell me?"
The boy pouted his mouth, on the verge of tears. "Because you say I can't eat chocolate for breakfast." With a bowed head, he pulled out a chair and climbed to sit on it while refusing to meet his mother's watchful gaze.
Witnessing her son's honesty, Angela couldn't be mad at him for nearly going behind her back. Steven was the one she should be mad at for promising him chocolate or better yet, for promising him and then not keeping his promise at all. Though she knew that wasn't like Steven. Something was not right with him.
Angela crouched before Daniel and untangled his crossed arms. "I'll tell you what. I will make you chocolate toast this morning." Elated, the boy stood up on the chair. "Just this once though."
"Yes, mommy." Daniel jumped towards Angela, snaking his little arms around her neck in the tightest embrace. "Can we meet Steven afterwards? I want to pat him in the head for not waking me up."
