"And what about me?" Steven spoke the biggest question they wanted answered.
"Yes, Doctor, what about Steven? Is he a match?" Angela was just as eager as Steven.
"That's my second point." The Doctor informed.
"And?"
"Steven is also a half-match."
"What does that mean?" A much anxious Angela moved to the edge of her seat.
"Can I be his donor?" Steven said the question clearer.
Dr. Gibbs cleared his throat. "We prefer if a donor is a match by seventy-five percent or more."
Angela's and Steven's face fell instantly.
"However," Dr. Gibbs continued, "sometimes a half-match is as good as a full-match."
Angela straightened up in her seat. Hope reappeared on her face. "So can he be his donor?"
"Can I?" Steven mirrored Angela's helpless, hopeful gaze.
"Well, if you remain aware that there is still the possibility of not being a hundred percent success, then yes, Steven can be a donor to Daniel."
As soon as the verdict was announced, Angela and Steven had froze. They were incredulous. They were nearly losing all the hope and then, this.
Soon, Steven's lips began twitching upwards. "I'm going to be Daniel's donor, Angela." He laughed unbelievably. "I'm going to be his donor."
"Oh, Steven." Angela flew from her seat to throw her arms around him in joy. Angela joined his laughter. Sobbed her happy tears in the crook of his neck.
Finally. Their complicated messy life had a good news. The best one yet.
"The mighty Steven Morris defied the odds again." Angela whispered into his ear.
"I'm starting to think I really am mighty after all." Steven pulled her face back enough to pierce his eyes with hers. "I can help my son Angela. I promised I will. Now I'm going to save him."
For a whole week, Daniel, Steven and Angela had been meeting with a medical team to be briefed on the transplant process, to be lectured about the risks and benefit and discussed the treatment plan. Daniel had been through more preparatory tests. The young boy not once complained. From the day Angela told him that after the procedure he may return to a life that included soccer practice, he was eager to do anything even if that meant that for the days prior to the procedure he was to be nauseous and weak from the chemotherapy. For a whole week, Angela accompanied by Steven took Daniel to the hospital every single day for chemotherapy to prepare his body for the transplant.
"Did he eat anything yet?
"Look at that," Jimmy's sarcastic voice interjected while he sneered at Steven. "Loving the role now, huh. Now that the hardest part is over. Now that Daniel's not a baby anymore."
Steven's temper began to rise. What was with this guy?
Before he could make a step, Angela stopped him with a hand on his chest then hurried to Jimmy and tugged him away with her clutch on his wrist. "Jimmy. Stop this or go back home and explain to your mama why I refused to come."
"Come on. You know I didn't say anything wrong."
"Hey, Jimmy." Steven approached them. "Is this why you came all this way here, to invite us to dinner? Couldn't you just have called? Or did you come to check on 'Angel', see if I had hurt her yet?"
What the hell had gotten into him? It was as if suddenly Steven couldn't stop his disdainful remarks at Jimmy. Was that what he thought? Was that jealousy?
The hand that Angela had around Jimmy's forearm tightened in warning. Even though she knew Jimmy was right to be angered at Steven's words. What was Steven trying to do? Get himself punched by Jimmy?
Jimmy removed her hand away and strode to Steven with a scowl on his face. Angela trailed, stood cautiously between the two men. She could guess what could follow if they anger each.
