Without even wasting a second to think about it, Jimmy went to sit on the other sit of Daniel. The men were engrossed in watching the game in an instant. Angela and Grace joined in from the little they knew about the game. Apparently, Steven now also had a newfound talent of humor. He had comically did a commentary of the game with Jimmy's help. Both Angela and Grace were left surprised and pleased at the same time that Steven and Jimmy had joined forces to lighten the heavy mood and make Daniel less at ease.
Before they knew it, the transplant was completed. The nurses began to remove Daniel's tubes and that's when they remembered what they were doing there.
Steven saw Daniel watching the nurses going around him and he knew he had to take the boy's mind away.
"So," began Steven. "What the verdict, Mr. Daniel..." Steven trailed off. "Mr. Daniel."
Angela noticed Steven had refrained from saying Daniel's last name. She didn't even blame him. His son didn't have his last name after all.
"Hm." Daniel scrunched up his nose while he mimicked thinking. "You weren't that bad."
"Than you have to keep on teaching me."
The door opening and closing interrupted the conversation and averted everyone's gaze to Marie standing at the door.
Steven instantly looked at Angela. He didn't need to utter a word to question her what his mother was doing there. His eyes did the talking.
Angela shrugged a little. "I told her everything."
A few days before, Angela had gone to Marie and told her all about their marriage, about their divorce and Steven being Daniel's father.
Marie walked to her son Steven while he remained frozen still. "Now I understand exactly why you came to see me. You had failed your family just like me."
And it was then that Steven reached for his mother's hand. He shook his head. "No. I've done worse than you." He admitted in barely a whisper.
"That you did. You let go of the most beautiful thing you had in your life." Marie clutched his hand as she peered at Angela with a wide affectionate smile.
"I'm sorry I let you go too, mama." Steven called the name he used for his mother when he was a little boy. He pressed tightly on her hand. Accepting his mother.
"Oh, my son." Marie engulfed Steven into her arms. Like a little boy who needed his mother, Steven buried his face in her shoulder. "You have no idea how proud I am of you, my son."
Angela watched the scene before her with tears on the lashes of her eyes. She knew Steven needed his mother. That's why she called Marie.
For the first time that day, they were finally at ease. The light smile on their faces couldn't seem to fade.
When Angela looked up at him, their glowing eyes pierced with each other. "Thank you Steven."
He nodded lightly. "And thank you too."
"For what?"
"For Daniel. He's amazing Angela. Thank you." Steven held her closer.
For a moment, it was just them and the silence in the room. Until his lips moved close to her ear and whispered. "I do love you Angela." Angela pulled back enough from him to look him in the eye. "Just because I said that earlier while sedated doesn't mean it wasn't honest. Guess I needed to wake up in a hospital bed and be glad it's your face I saw first to realize that."
Angela's breath caught in her throat. She couldn't speak, couldn't move.
Steven pulled her back in her arms and held her tighter. Angela relished in the feeling of being that close to him. She didn't know what to say, what to do. So she just held onto him.
